If you’ve ever played in your mother’s cosmetics case as a child, you probably remember the sincere curiosity of learning all about her makeup and “experimenting.” Or, you may have had a family member or friend glam you up for a school performance or dance recital. Chances are a little lip gloss, blush, and just a few subtle strokes of mascara were involved.
But it comes as no surprise during a time of Instagram eyebrows, contoured cheeks, and perfectly painted lips that young girls are picking up makeup brushes a lot sooner than they used to.
Philadelphia-based makeup artist Cookie Torres, also know as @thatsfiercemakeup on Instagram, recently captured the attention of more than one million viewers by posting this video of her applying a full face of makeup on her 1-year-old granddaughter. Although the video is pretty darn cute, it has stirred controversy, considering the little girl’s age.
One commenter wrote, “I saw a repost of this video and I love it! I’m a young grandmother myself, so I understand wanting to make your grandbabies happy! It’s a shame that you’ve gotten so many negative comments for something so harmless, but you seem like a strong family that will rise above the hate! God bless you and your family ?.”
Another commenter said, “ugh i love this video so much it’s so cute!! i just don’t like how a lot of ppl on tumblr took this video as a way of how children are being hypersexualized like….SHES A BABY she’s doing dress up!! like don’t ever tell me you’ve never wanted to put on makeup when you were little just for play.”
Backlash brewed in the comments section, of course, with someone saying, “Really.. Make up on a baby? Think of all those chemicals on her skin?! She’s so young and pure why would you, no matter how many times she asks she’s still only a baby ????????.”
And another individual questioned Torres’s intelligence: “are u stupid? thats child ur gonna ruin her skin.”
However, Torres made sure she included a clear message for anyone who opposed this precious bonding moment with her granddaughter. “To all the negative comments that will come …I’m a makeup artist this is my granddaughter. Sometimes I babysit while I’m working clients & she watches. She’ll be 2 in 3 months but is very smart & advance. Love books, cartoons, & has a beautiful childhood, this was the first time I ever applied makeup on her face because she’s been asking me for weeks & with her puppy eyes & her little voice saying “pleeeeeezzz glamaaaa” I couldn’t resist & I gave in. My daughter recorded it so I posted it. Many of you have your kids face painted at carnivals, play dress them up as princesses with heels. It’s innocent fun and play time with grandma. I would love for you to keep the negative comments to yourself!”
No matter which side of the argument you are on when it comes to babies and makeup, one thing is clear, and that’s that this 1-year-old’s eyebrows are on fleek! Keep scrolling to see more adorable little girls who just might be makeup mavens in the making.
