10 Editors Share Beauty Products They Wish They Could Steal From Their Moms
Have you ever come across a product you were curious about but not brave enough to test? Not to worry! Yahoo Beauty presents Editor Obsessions, where editors dish on their most-loved beauty products that will inspire you to try something new.
As the saying goes — “Mom knows best,” and once upon a time, before many of us knew what highlighter or dry shampoo was, our own mothers were the gatekeepers of the beauty secrets we would one day make our own. Not only do we learn our moms’ most practiced beauty rituals but we also get to see firsthand all the essential products that always seem to find a special spot on their vanities.
Whether it was the perfect complexion-perfecting compact that blended beautifully with her skin tone, a statement lipstick she always wore, or the sunscreen she wouldn’t dare walk out of the house without, every mom has that one signature product.
For this month’s edition of Editor Obsessions, 10 Yahoo editors are sharing the products their moms absolutely swear by.
Dana Oliver, Beauty Director
“My mother’s complexion naturally shines without any makeup, but she appears more luminous after pressing her go-to, Fashion Fair Cream-to-Powder Foundation in Tawny, into her supersoft skin. Naturally, I tried to mimic her but realized years later that I had to discover my perfect foundation match!”
Beth Greenfield, Senior Lifestyle Writer
“My mom has never really been into many beauty products, but she’s always been brand-loyal — particularly when it comes to her iconic yellow moisturizer, Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, which she’s been using faithfully since at least the early 1980s. And judging by her velvety-soft and supple skin — even now, in her mid ’70s — it’s paid off.”
Rachel Grumman Bender, Beauty and Style Writer/Editor
“My mom has taken amazing care of her skin for years, and she’s the reason I try to take such good care of my own. For as far back as I can remember, my mom has used Lac-Hydrin Five Lotion, a lotion that contains skin-smoothing alpha-hydroxy acids, during the day and prescription Retin-A — the gold standard antiaging wonder — at night. She never goes a day without using those products. My mom also avoids the sun — another good habit I’ve picked up from her. The result? My mom’s skin is utterly luminous — though to me, she has always glowed from the inside out.”
Donna Freydkin, Celebrity Style Editor
“My mom had a little vanity right by our front door, and she’d do her makeup on her way out of the apartment, always taking the time to use her key products: blush, powder, and lipstick. I will never forget watching her standing there, meticulously applying Estée Lauder lipstick in colors ranging from mauve to maple. She took such good care of her makeup, and kept those lipsticks — the ones that still come in that signature gold case — in a makeup bag. They lasted and lasted. I think about that as I throw my own cosmetics into my crumb-filled tote — how everything has become so disposable and easily replaced.”
Casey Hollister, Photo Editor
“My mom has sworn by Cetaphil for as long as I can remember. There are only a few instances I can think about when her skin remedy answer wasn’t ‘Cetaphil’ (e.g., those terrible teenage years). As an adult, I still find myself reaching for it because, as she always said — and was so right about — ‘It is clean, natural, not oily, and it does not have an overwhelming scent.’ You can always find a jar in her bathroom, my sisters’, and my own. I even spotted one in my nephew’s room, because it’s so gentle that my sister uses it on her son’s sensitive baby skin.”
Tanya Edwards, Health and Beauty Editor-at-Large
“My mom’s routine always started with Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Cream. She would say, ‘Moisturize right after you wash your face. Morning and night.’ When I walk by a Clinique counter in a store, I feel a crazy wave of nostalgia. My mom was super loyal to the brand and would wait for the free gift bag offer. My real introduction to beauty was when we’d play with the sample-size blushes and other treats in those bags. I’ll always associate makeup with those times. When I was 11, she gave me my first bottle of facial moisturizer, and I’ve followed her advice ever since. Always moisturize!”
Devon Kelley, Assistant Health and Beauty Editor
“My mom’s beauty routine is and always has been limited to three products: sesame oil, a creamy rose lipstick, and most importantly, sunblock. She lathers up every day without fail, and her go-to is La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60.”
Jacqueline Laurean Yates, Beauty Editor
“Ever since I can remember, my mom has been dedicated to deep, dark rouge lipsticks. Whether she was dressed up or dressed down, she would always have deep lipsticks from Revlon or anything similar. As weird as it sounds, I’m not a fan of how the deep hues wear on me, but I’m longing for the day I find a hue that fits me as well as her signature color fits her.”
Priscilla De Castro, Photo Editor
“My mom always made sure to apply mascara if she didn’t have time for anything else. I inherited my mom’s very delicate eyelashes, so now as an adult I completely understand why her go-to was always Maybelline New York Great Lash Waterproof Mascara. It definitely enhances our eyes when applying.”
Nadeen Nakib, Photo Editor
“I remember watching her apply red Revlon lipstick in the mirror before work and thinking, ‘Wow, she’s so beautiful, and I want to be just like her.’ Even her kisses at the end of the day would leave a slight stain on my cheeks that I didn’t want to take off. I still hope I can be half of the strong, beautiful, red-lipstick-rocking woman she is today.”
