Dana Oliver, Beauty Director
“My summer beauty wishlist is chock full of products, accessories, and tools that will ensure my kinky, coily hair is hydrated and healthy.”
Mizani 25 Miracle Milk Leave-In Treatment
This moisturizing spray is the absolute best! It instantly rejuvenates my dry, flat locks with just a few spritzes, adding sheen and bounce. I’m now down to the last drop, so I’ll need at least two more bottles in stock. ($20, ulta.com)
Jane Carter Solution Curl Drench Cleansing Co Wash
Ever since I’ve started to wash my natural hair more frequently, I’ve noticed a dramatic difference in the overall condition of my strands. Jane Carter Solution’s Curl Drench Cleansing Co Wash removes build-up from my hair and scalp without stripping away much-needed moisture. It delivers just enough slip, which helps with the detangling process to deliver defined curls. Not to mention, the fruity-floral fragrance reminds me of Jamaica. ($12, janecartersolution.com)
Tangle Teezer Thick & Curly Detangling Hairbrush
I absolutely loathe detangling my hair, but the Tangle Teezer Thick & Curly Detangling Hairbrush takes the stress completely out of this step. The rounded shape also makes it super easy to grip tight, and the flexible teeth loosen up single-strand knots without causing damage. ($15, sephora.com)
Shea Moisture Jojoba Oil & Ucuuba Track Tension & Itch Relief Serum
It’s inevitable that I will be wearing braids this summer, and it’s also inevitable that my scalp will itch. I’m looking forward to trying out this Jojoba Oil & Ucuuba Butter Track Tension & Itch Relief Serum by Shea Moisture. ($9.99, sheamoisture.com)
The Wrap Life Head Wraps
Last, but certainly not least, I’ll need a couple of these solid and colorful head wraps by The Wrap Life. They’ll carry me through the warm-weather season in style. ($24, thewrap.life)
Rachel Grumman Bender, Beauty and Style Writer/Editor
“This summer, I’m looking for multitasking beauty products, invisible sun protection, and makeup that provides a subtle pop of color.”
Exo Face Bio.digital Perfection Moisturizer
This multitasking product, which some are calling the “moisturizer of the future,” is on my wishlist because it’s a moisturizer and anti-aging serum in one. The product contains human exosomes — which apparently help cells repair themselves and lock in hydration — and promises a 95 percent reduction in fine lines. At $118 for a 2-month supply, the price is on the steep side, but if I can replace multiple products with it, it just might be worth it. ($118, exoskinsimple.com)
Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30
I’m constantly trying out sunscreen products to protect my fair, freckled skin, but I’ve learned that finding SPF-infused serums or moisturizers that don’t leave my face super-shiny is no easy task. My plan this summer: Go back to Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30, which goes on clear and disappears into your skin — so much so that you almost worry whether it’s actually working even though it is. It also has anti-aging peptides and acts like a smoothing primer. Added bonus that I recently learned about: You can also apply it over your makeup for an easy sunscreen touch-up. ($65, sephora.com)
Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Fresh Papaya
I don’t stray far from soft mauves and creamy beiges when it comes to lip gloss, but now that summer is here, I’m ready for something a little more fun and out of my comfort zone, like a subtle orange lip shade. I’ve been eyeing Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Fresh Papaya, which has a pinkish-orange hue that seems like a good bridge product to take me over to the brighter side. The lip balm also has fruit extracts and shea butter to keep lips hydrated and smooth. ($7, target.com)
Leonor Greyl Eclat Naturel
I highlight my hair and blow dry it on the regular (and okay, occasionally flat iron or curl it, too — guilty!), which often leaves my strands parched, particularly in the summer. Leonor Greyl Eclat Naturel leave-in styling cream is on my wishlist since it’s loaded with shea butter and jojoba oil to revive thirsty hair. It also helps protect strands from heat styling and the sun, and is cruelty-free. ($46, leonorgreyl-usa.com)
Donna Freydkin, Celebrity Style Editor
“I’ve been lucky in the skin department, and even at my age, have very few wrinkles or fine lines. That being said, I also have red spots and uneven skin tone, plus major sun damage from years of frying on various beaches. Spoiler alert: not wearing sunscreen as a kid is a bad idea. So, my summer goal is to even out my complexion.”
Skyn Iceland Antidote Cooling Daily Lotion
It soothes irritated and angry skin and chills it out. ($45, skyniceland.com)
Chanel Le Blanc Serum Healthy Light Creator
The formula is super-luxe, soaks right in and reduces dark spots. ($195, chanel.com)
Chantecaille Blanc Gardenia Brightening Emulsion
It is a magical product that is yummy and lightweight, and helps create an even skin tone. ($160, chantecaille.com)
Tata Harper Daily ReGenerating Cleanser
This is my absolute can’t-live-without brand. This baby clears up your skin without stripping it and totally makes it glow. ($78, tataharperskincare.com)
Devon Kelley, Assistant Health and Beauty Editor
“I know it’s mostly in my head, but despite being a total water baby and loving the ocean, I also think I look like a ghostly noob on the beach. Being as pale as I am makes achieving that glowy, sunny look pretty difficult, but I’m making a point to embrace it this summer and live out my beach bum days like the un-bronzed goddess that I am.”
Glossier Generation G in Zip
I’m opting for a minimal beauty look this summer, and one of my favorite looks in the heat is barely-there and very hydrated with a bright, but sheer lip. I’ve been dying to try Glossier Generation G in Zip — this slightly sheer, matte lipstick would look perfect with glowing skin and a no-fuss eye. ($18, glossier.com)
Byredo Flowerhead Eau De Parfum
I love this clean scent all year round, but it’s particularly perfect in the summer. Despite its floral notes, it’s got a very fresh smell that isn’t heavy or synthetic. I ran out of it quickly because everybody that enters my bathroom, regardless of gender, sneaks a spritz. ($150, byredo.com)
LED Fitness Data Smart Rope in Chrome
Ever since taking a boxing class at The Dogpound a few months ago, only to find that my jump roping skills are borderline pathetic, I’ve been committed to sucking less and am now addicted. It’s the perfect way to ensure you can get in some cardio while traveling, and having a cool rope that tracks your activity is goals. ($90, fancy.com)
Essie Full Steam Ahead
I haven’t worn nail polish in years, but I love this soft lilac with barely-there sparkles, and I’m convinced that this is going to be the color of the moment after we all tired of millennial pink. ($9, essie.com)
Janessa Leoné Carolina Hat
I love this classic boater hat in a modern shade. I don’t necessarily have a head for hats, but my skin burns after just minutes in the sun, so it’s time for me to become one of those hat people. ($265, janessaleone.com)
Jacqueline Laurean Yates, Beauty Editor
“This summer, I’m all about playing with products that require minimal effort but provide maximum results. Bright pops of eyeshadow that stay in place and matte lipsticks that won’t budge are right up my alley. Anything with an iridescent look to it is on my wishlist too, because it helps me channel my inner unicorn vibes — plus, all those cool reflective colors are just mesmerizing to stare at.”
Milk Makeup Holographic Stick
A few swipes of this along my cheekbones will probably grant me the opportunity to skip out on (sometimes fussy) added steps like highlighter and bronzer. When I’m really feeling myself during those hot beach days, I’ll add a little on my arms and legs for an extra pop. ($28, milkmakeup.com)
Frank Body Shimmer Scrub
If there is really a such thing as fairy dust, this is probably the closest thing to it. I fell head over heels for Frank’s coffee scrub because it exfoliated my skin really well without leaving it overly dry, so when I heard there was a sugary shimmery remixed version of it, I was elated. Can’t wait to get this scrub all over my body! ($20, frankbody.com)
Flirt Cosmetics Muva Mouth Matte Liquid Lipstick
Muva Rosebud has teamed up with Flirt to create this gorgeous matte made in heaven. I have swatched all three colors, and believe me, they last nearly all day. I’m in love with the Bada** shade because it’s a very wearable nude for darker-toned lips. Also, surprisingly enough, the matte formula doesn’t chap my lips. ($18, flirtcosmetics.com)
China Glaze My Little Pony Polish in I Sea Ponies
This holographic chrome-based polish is every unicorn lover’s dream. Oh, and that cute little bottle it comes in… adorbs! ($9, available at Ulta in July)
Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Color Paints
Only having to use my ring finger, I swiped on the matte turquoise shade and instantly said to myself, “This is going to be one of my new summer go-to’s.” The creamy texture glides across lids and stays put. I’m excited to try all the other hues soon. ($25, sephora.com)
Elena Sheppard, Style & Beauty Editor
“I just turned 30, so my summer beauty goals (maybe my life beauty goals?) are definitely to seriously hunker down on wrinkle prevention. Unfortunately, all the products that allegedly ‘really work’ are super expensive. They’re still on my wishlist though.”
Creme De La Mer Moisturizing Cream
Every time I go to a beauty supply store and ask about night creams, the person working there basically says, “There is one that actually really, really works.” This is the one they all recommend. It’s prohibitively expensive but eventually I’m just going to cave. The skin is the largest organ after all, right? I gotta take care of it. ($310, cremedelamer.com)
Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask
I had a roommate who was obsessed with Tata Harper, and because of her, I became obsessed, too. All the products smell amazing and I swear masks make my skin look instantly better. It’s time for me to stop mooching Tata Harper products and invest in my own. ($58, tataharperskincare.com)
La Mer The Illuminating Eye Gel
La Mer again, but when you’re the best; you’re the best! I can already tell that crow’s feet are in my future, and if this eye cream can help prevent them, then let’s go. Plus, it’s less money than the La Mer night cream. Maybe this will be my first step into the La Mer world. ($150, cremedelamer.com)
Casey Hollister, Photo Editor
“This summer, I want to look like I’m just getting back from the beach or country at all times, so my go-to products will be floral scents and light makeup. I don’t wear a lot of makeup as it is, and in the summer, it is even tougher going from workout classes to crowded subways and scorching humidity. It definitely takes a specific skincare regimen to survive these months, and I’m keeping it natural and fresh.”
Maison Margiela ‘Replica’ Flower Market
This whole perfume line is amazing. The concept is based around “reproducing familiar scents and moments of varying locations and periods,” and the variety of scents work year-round. As the name states, the Flower Market fragrance replicates the scent of strolling through a Parisian market. I tried a sample of it and got tons of compliments on my scent. ($126, nordstrom.com)
Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint
Glossier’s skin tint feels so light that you forget you’re wearing makeup. This is the perfect coverup for the beach or any hot day, as you can comfortably put sunscreen on top of it without feeling caky and sweating it all off in the heat. I’m very into the dewy skin look, especially in a heat wave, so Glossier gets me. ($26, glossier.com)
IGK Beach Club
My curly hair has a tendency to go frizzy in the summer due to the heat and humidity. But my hair loves ocean water, and since I will not be able to frequent the beach daily this summer, I would love to get IGK Beach Club Texture Spray, which is basically the beach in a bottle. It protects your hair, while also giving the effect of textured locks that were just soaking up the Atlantic Ocean. ($29, igkhair.com)
Coola Classic SPF 30 Dawn Patrol Makeup Primer
Recently, maybe due to my age or my different skincare practices, I have been breaking out a few days after being in the sun. I typically do not break out, so it has been upsetting to find that any time I get a little color on my face, I have 10 new pimples a few days later. Lucky for me, I work around the best beauty editors, so I confided in one recently about how to fix this and what product I should try. She recommended Coola Dawn Patrol Make-up Primer. It is an all-natural, gel-based formula that you put on as primer and has honeysuckle, white lily, and iris stem cells. It also scores higher on the safety measure for protection. This is a must for my summer wishlist. ($42, coolasuncare.com)
Jennifer Fox, Senior Photo Editor
This summer, I’m on a mission of sorts — to find skin serum that can help keep my skin calm and clear, but that is safe enough for me to use while I’m breastfeeding.
Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum
Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum is a product that people can’t stop gushing about; a natural serum that is capable of curing all of your skin ailments — everything from general dry spots to breakouts. I was intrigued and even thought it’s way more than I would normally think about spending on a single product. If I can skip applying makeup daily and still have glowing fresh skin, it would be totally worth it. ($185, vintnersdaughter.com)
Saint Laurent Pop Water Vernis Glossy Stain
I really love the idea of wearing a lip color, but generally I am not a fan of lipstick, gloss or anything that requires me to reapply or that might dry out my lips. The idea of a stain feels fresh and low maintenance, which if you can’t tell is a bit of a beauty mantra for me. I’ve tried some of the drugstore brands in the past and they just haven’t been what I’m looking for, so this summer I’m going to try YSL’s Pop Water Glossy Stain. The promise of watercolor-kissed lips and moisture is too good to pass up. ($36, neimanmarcus.com)
Moroccan Oil Intense Curl Creme
Finally, I’m adding Moroccan Oil intense curl creme to my summer beauty wishlist. My naturally curly hair needs extra moisture in the summer heat and I hate how some curl creams leave my hair feeling crunchy or stiff. This product promises to leave my curls soft without weighing them down and since I can apply it to my hair wet, it’s a major time saver, too! ($39, moroccanoil.com)
Fabiana Buontempo, Production Assistant
“My beauty goal for this summer is to load up on SPF. I want to make sure that when I’m in the sun, I don’t apply my sunscreen once and then bake for hours. I really want to be diligent about taking breaks and going in the shade and reapplying sunscreen like it’s my job. Everything we do now to our bodies will show up years down the road. Note to all: wrinkles are never in!”
NARS Liquid Blush in Luster
I never tan my face in the summer so I’m all about achieving a healthy, bronzed glow with makeup. With a little help from bronzer and this liquid blush from NARS, it’s super easy to look sun-kissed and glowy. I’m not a fan of cream blushes, and powder blushes can sometimes look too cakey, so this gorgeous liquid formula will be perfect for the hot summer months. I heard this blush sells out quickly so I need to get my hands on one ASAP. ($30, sephora.com)
Ole Henriksen Counter Balance Oil Control Hydrator
I deal with combination skin so this Ole Henriksen primer that promises to mattify and hydrate skin at the same time is music to my ears. It’s so rare to find a makeup primer that does both, so I’m dying to see if this hydrator does what it promises. ($34, sephora.com)
Kat Von D Lock-It Blotting Powder
In my opinion, nothing is worse than having a shiny, slick looking face in the warm summer months. Even if you’ve properly primed your face, chose the right foundation for warm weather, sometimes you’ll still be left with a glare shining bright on your forehead as the day goes on. I typically use blotting sheets to absorb my excess oil but I’ve heard such amazing things about this blotting powder that doesn’t make you break out that I really want to give it a try. ($29, sephora.com)
COVER FX Clear Cover Invisible Sunscreen
Since my summer beauty goal is to be best friends with sunscreen, I really want to try this invisible sunscreen. I’m sold on the fact that this SPF goes on your face clear. COVER FX is so smart for making a sunscreen that is ideal for all skin types and skin tones. ($45, sephora.com)
Kerry Justich, Beauty and Style News Writer
“For beauty, I like to focus on keeping my skin clear throughout the summer months, although it gets difficult with the heat and humidity building up. I also tend to suffer through a number of sunburns, so SPF is a must!”
BareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Moisturizer – Hydrating Gel Cream
This is my go-to tinted moisturizer throughout the year, and serves as my primary face product throughout the summer as well. Since it’s always so hot, I like to stay away from heavy foundation or concealer that will melt off of my face. Now, I need it in a different color for my summer tan. ($30, bareminerals.com)
Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs, and Rosewater
I live for setting sprays, and this refreshes the face as well. I always used to sneak into my roommates bathroom in college to steal a spray (or five) of hers and need to get my hands on my own bottle this summer. ($7, mariobadescu.com)
St. Tropez Self Tan Express Advanced Bronzing Mousse
I’m extremely fair-skinned, so it’s impossible for me to sit in the sun without getting completely burned. This summer especially, I’m trying to be more cautious about sun exposure and will resort to more fake tanning, which is not an issue with this self-tanner. It’s the best product I’ve used for a natural glow and I recommend it to everyone! ($44, sttropeztan.com)
L’Oréal Voluminous Lash Paradise Waterproof Mascara
I have heard the absolute best things about this mascara, and am a sucker for anything waterproof during the summer. I tend to have mascara dripping down my face if I put on the wrong one, and would love to try this waterproof formula out. ($10, lorealparisusa.com)
