These 2 Siblings Both Realized They Were Transgender
After watching a video on transgender people, siblings Thomas and Nyr both realized their true genders were different than their assigned gender at birth,People reports.
Thomas, 17, was the first one to realize he was transgender, followed by Nyr, 12, who also realized the same was true for her.
Their mother Emma told People she wasn't surprised by Thomas's realization, since he'd always said he wanted to look more like a boy, but hearing Nyr identified as female was harder for Emma to accept initially because she worried "maybe she was just following her brother."
Emma later reached out to a local clinic specializing in gender and sexuality development, as well as a therapist, and finally realized that Thomas and Nyr truly identified as the opposite their birth genders. Their family also began regular therapy sessions to deal with the depression both children were facing.
Thomas says he doesn't want to undergo hormones or surgery and sees his body as "just another variation" of what a man can look like, while Nyr started taking hormones and says it really helped her with her depression and suicidal thoughts.
The children's father, who is separated from their mom, said the news was particularly hard for him, since he had a very traditional idea of what gender was, but that he now knows that "[t]his is not about me. It is about my children and the way they choose to live their lives."
So yeah, basically the coolest family ever.
