4 Non-Chalky Dry Shampoos for Brunettes

Dry shampoo might as well be my religion, I believe in it so deeply. As a fine-hair haver, I spritz it on any time I want to add texture, fullness, or grip to a style (so pretty much every day); whenever my roots are looking a little flat; and yes, when I’ve skipped a day (or three) of actual shampooing. But as a brunette, I’ve found that most of the powdery white formulas—even the ones that claim to be translucent—leave behind a chalky cast. Fortunately I discovered these four tinted versions.
Batiste Dry Shampoo in Dark & Deep Brown. This product comes in three different tints (one for light hair, one for medium-brown hair, and one for very dark hair, shown above). It uses lightweight, finely milled rice starch to absorb oil and costs less than $10 at the drugstore.
Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo in Dark Tone. Sure, I may be drawn to this one because I’m basically addicted to the vanilla-y, orange-blossom scent of Moroccanoil’s entire product range. That’s definitely one reason to love it, but this new product from the brand (available in April) also uses subtle, violet-tinged pigments to make brown hair look multidimensional, and it’s great for adding volume at the roots.

Bumble and Bumble A Tint of Brown Hair Powder. I was 16 years old and working as a receptionist at a salon in Ohio when I first discovered this product. It was the first time I’d encountered dry shampoo, and I knew right away that it would completely change my styling routine. The superfine mist sops up oil and lends fullness without making my hair feel gunked up, and the tint is so effective, you can even use it to help camouflage roots between color appointments.
Klorane Dry Shampoo With Oat Milk in Natural Tint. A tinted version of the cult-favorite, multiyear Best of Beauty–winning formula, this product is paler than the others included here, so it’s ideal for light- to medium-brown shades (it may look a bit chalky on superdark hair). It’s also paraben- and sulfate-free, if you’re into that kind of thing (and I am).
