5 New Foundations That Truly Wear Like a Second Skin
The road to finding the best foundation for your skin tone can be exciting yet a bit grueling. It’s amazing when you find the perfect match, because unlike lipsticks or eyeshadows, you’re more than likely to stick with the same shade all season long. On the other hand, tracking down a flawless foundation can also be an annoying process when your only options are too light, too dark, or just not right for your skin’s texture.
Thanks to new advancements and technologies, beauty brands have finally begun to expand their foundation collections to go beyond a handful of colors that cover only a small selection of skin tones. Now there is everything from stick foundations to cushion compacts that deliver satisfying results for all to enjoy.
Curious to see how well some of the latest foundations wear? Yahoo staffers put them to the test to see which ones worked best for their skin tones. With the help of New York City-based runway and editorial makeup artist Maria Ortega, we were able to find five foundations that took our skin from “yes” to “yassss!”
Tester #1: Bianca Rhule, sales and executive coordinator
Best Options: Marc Jacobs Beauty Re(marc)able Full Cover Foundation Concentrate in Cocoa Deep 86, Mary Kay CC Cream Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15 in Very Deep, BareMinerals barePRO Performance Liquid Foundation in Cocoa 30, Kevyn Aucoin Etherealist Foundation in Deep EF 16
Winner: Kevyn Aucoin Etherealist Foundation in Deep EF 16 ($58, sephora.com)
This shade wore like smooth velvet on Bianca’s skin. The chocolate-toned hue evened out her complexion and provided a gorgeous base. The formula is also perfect for oiler skin types, as it has mattifying ingredients that will keep your canvas shine-free and looking good all day long.
Tester #2: Devon Kelley, assistant health and beauty editor
Best Options: Lanc?me Teint Idole Ultrawear Foundation Stick SPF 21 in 140 Ivorie N, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Tint in Classic Ivory, Tom Ford Waterproof Foundation/Concealer in Cream, Stellar Limitless Foundation in SO1
Winner: Tom Ford Waterproof Foundation and Concealer in Cream ($82, tomford.com)
Don’t let the steep price tag freak you out. This foundation keeps you from buying a separate foundation because it is a two-in-one, with concealer. While Devon already has a pretty even complexion, this creamy foundation nearly melted into her skin, leaving her with a gorgeous glow. Plus, it’s waterproof and won’t escape your face as soon as you break a sweat or go for a swim this summer.
Tester #3: Jacqueline Laurean Yates, beauty editor
Best Options: Lanc?me Teint Idole Ultrawear Foundation Stick SPF 21 in 510 Suede C, IMAN Luxury Concealing Foundation in Earth 2, Marc Jarcobs Beauty Genius Gel Super-Charged Foundation in Cocoa Medium 84, Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation in Caramel 55
Winner: Iman Luxury Concealing Foundation in Earth 2 ($16, target.com)
After she tried a few close runner-up shades, this seamless foundation worked best with the yellow undertones in Jacqueline’s skin. It didn’t take much effort to blend and cover up any hyperpigmentation. If your skin tends to get really oily, the formula is also oil-free, making it ideal for those types of skin textures.
Tester #4: Julie Romero, executive coordinator, Office of Inclusive Diversity
Best Options: Givenchy Matissime Velvet Radiant Mattifying Fluid Foundation SPF 20 in Mat Ginger, Wet n Wild Photo Focus Foundation in Desert Beige, Tarte Clay Stick Foundation in Tan Sand, Lanc?me Teint Idole Ultrawear Foundation Stick SPF 21 in 370 BISQUE W
Winner: Givenchy Matissime Velvet Radiant Mattifying Fluid Foundation SPF 20 in Mat Ginger ($54, sephora.com)
This hue felt almost too good to be true on Julie’s bronzed caramel skin. The satin-like texture feels light and stays put. Plus, with key ingredients such as ginger and cinnamon extract, this foundation also works overtime to help tighten pores and keep skin looking tight.
Tester #5: Meredith Mills, talent builder, engineering
Best Options: Tarte Clay Stick Foundation in Tan-Deep Honey, Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra Longwear Foundation in Maple, bareMinerals barePRO Performance Liquid Foundation in Nutmeg, Givenchy Matissime Velvet Radiant Mattifying Fluid Foundation SPF 20 in Mat Amber
Winner: Tarte Clay Stick Foundation in Tan-Deep Honey ($39, tartecosmetics.com)
Selecting just the right shade for Meredith ended up being a very close call because, like many of us, she has lots of varying pigments throughout her skin. However, Tarte’s stick foundation glided against her face like a magic wand, and the Tan-Deep color was just the right remedy. Additionally, it’s a naturally derived vegan-friendly product that’s good for the earth. Can’t go wrong there, right? Double win.
