5 Ways to Incorporate Oils Into Your Grooming Routine
By Katie Chang
It took a while, but we’ve finally reached a point where we’re fully embracing and extolling the benefits of healthy fats—think nuts, coconut and olive oil, and avocados—in our diets.
And now this writer thinks it’s time to apply the same thinking, namely in the form of oils, to your grooming regimen.
But if you’re convinced oils will render your skin greasy and clogged and your hair limp and lifeless, think again. According to Brandy Monique, the founder of the chic eco-apothecary brand Fig+Yarrow, “oils can supply skin and hair with it naturally needs without producing extra oil.”

There are a few things to bear in mind, however. For starters, just say no to mineral oil. “Some people believe it’s toxic and because it’s in so many products, it can cumulatively be harmful,” says Monique. “You might get the sense of hydration, too, but in the end it’s actually drying.” Also, if possible, look for products that feature a mix of hydrating oils, preferably certified organic. That way “you won’t get get any negative byproducts of the refinement process.”
Ready to experience the awesomeness of oils? We thought so. Here, five ways (from up-and-coming brands you should put on your radar) to help step up your grooming game.
Hair and Scalp | Fig+Yarrow’s Hair and Scalp Tonic
When’s the last time you heard a guy whine about having too much hair? Exactly. This multitasker—which you massage in, then shampoo out—promotes a healthier scalp to help keep what you already have, while making it stronger. Expert tip: it also makes an excellent aftershave and cuticle softener.
Face (Cleanser) | Meow Meow Tweet’s Facial Cleanser
The witch hazel gently purifies, while sunflower, jojoba and coconut oils leave your face completely clean, yet soft and comfortable. Not the least bit taut or dry. The crisp, herbaceous scent and whimsical packaging makes cleansing a treat morning and night.
Face (Moisturizer) | Grown Alchemist’s Anti-Oxidant+Facial Oil
Bigger isn’t always better. Take, for example, this tiny bottle, which packs a potent punch. From moisturizing to firming to fighting free radicals and reducing the appearance of unsightly dark spots, there’s little this potion can’t do. A few drops and you’re good to go.
Beard | Brooklyn Grooming’s Anchor Beard Oil
Let’s not forget the facially fuzzed. For you, there’s this lightweight blend of sesame, hempseed and organ oils. You’ll not only be rewarded with tame whiskers and soft skin underneath, you’ll leave an intoxicating, heady trail of cedar wood and Palo Santo for all your admirers.
Body Oil | Oille Natural’s Body Serum
The trick to getting the most out of this product is to massage it into damp skin, right after you hop out of the shower. It deeply hydrates even the roughest patches (like knees, elbows and hands), and absorbs quickly, so you don’t have to wait to get dressed.
