A Plastic Surgeon Answered All Your Burning Questions on Reddit
When it comes to beauty, there’s no arena with more unanswered questions than plastic surgery. Fortunately it’s becoming less and less taboo to discuss treatments like lip fillers, but can you honestly say you know exactly what a “mommy makeover” entails? Well, Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Glenn Vallecillos did a Reddit AMA (“Ask me anything”) to answer questions about celebrity clients, liposuction, and the future of the mysterious medical field. And since it’s Reddit, the questions and answers were pretty unfiltered.
Vallecillos says his philosophy is “that of ‘less is more,’ and especially when it comes to aesthetic medicine.” That means, he explained, that when a patient comes in requesting liposuction he occasionally turns him or her away. “We always recommend diet optimization and exercise,” Vallecillos said. “Often times people can reach their ideal goal without the need for surgery. Lipoplasty can offer a new element which is that of defined body contouring which may not be attainable with diet and exercise alone.”
Another procedure he’s turned down? Placing “overly sized implants in breasts.” It’s a common request, he admitted, but one that can have long-term complications. He also has an opinion on trending procedures like Brazilian butt lifts, which he claims may age poorly as soft tissue thins over time. But that doesn’t mean he shies away from altering clients’ figures. “Liposuction, rhinoplasty and breast augmentation” are his most requested procedures.
For everyone wondering what the next wave of plastic surgery will bring, Vallecillos has an interesting answer: 3D printing. As we learn more about growing organs in laboratory settings and even eliminate the need for organ donors, he predicts strides in regenerative medicine. That could mean great things for plastic surgery patients such as breast cancer survivors hoping for reconstructive surgery.
And as for those famous clients? Inquiring minds aren’t getting any names, but they did get a hint: “Too many to count ;).”
