Tequila Shots? No. Lady Gaga Celebrated Super Bowl With Ice Cream.
Born this way? Her vocal talent, for sure. But Lady Gaga left nothing to chance when she took the stage in Houston for the Super Bowl halftime show. It’s thanks to her longtime glam squad: hairstylist Frederic Aspiras and makeup artist Sarah Tanno.
Let’s just get it out of the way: Gaga slayed. Hard.
Her hair and makeup were on point (the clothes were Versace). And all her dancers had been with her for years, some from the beginning of her career, so there was not a single casting call. Clearly, Gaga believes in loyalty.
Before the show, Aspiras touched up Gaga’s blond color to give it maximum drama. Plus, he dipped her ends, coloring them a pastel pink with Matrix Color Sync Watercolors.
“When you come up with a look for the Super Bowl, a lot of elements come into play. You have to think about the lighting and the weather and the clothing and the dancing. We do so many big shows, but nothing like this before,” says Aspiras.
Her hair needed to flow but also stay in place during a high-energy performance that had her flying and diving. Aspiras used Matrix Style Link products on the entertainer. He washed her hair with Matrix Biolage R.A.W. Recover Shampoo and Matrix Biolage R.A.W. Re-Hab Mask. Then he applied Matrix Style Link Mineral Airy Builder from root to tips. Next, he sectioned Gaga’s hair and blew it dry using a large boar bristle brush. He layered Matrix Style Link Smooth Setter to the midsection and ends. Aspiras curled the top and sides using a medium barrel curling iron, and the back of the head with a large barrel curling iron. He brushed her strands out with a paddle brush and spritzed Matrix Style Link Texture Builder Messy finish spray all over. A good dose of hairspray completed the style.
Before she went onstage, “We said a really long prayer. We do pray before we get onstage, the dancers, the crew. The process is we’re focused. It’s a well-oiled machine. Minutes before, we all get quiet. OK, time to go.”
And after? Forget throwing back tequila shots. “We went back to the hotel and we had ice cream. We don’t do parties,” says Aspiras.
Her makeup was equally on point, thanks to Tanno and Marc Jacobs Beauty. On her eyes: Marc Jacobs Twinkle Pop eye shadow stick in Au Revoir as a base, followed by Highliner Gel Eye Crayon eyeliner in Violet Femme 82. The choice of Gaga working with Marc Jacobs — on herself and her entire team of dancers — was no accident. “I truly believe in the Marc Jacobs brand and what he stands for. He’s bold and boundary-pushing, and that’s Gaga,” says Tanno. Fun fact: Marc Jacobs provided a separate glam team solely for her backup dancers.
Tanno used the About Last Night Eye Con palette to give eyes depth and pop. Speaking of pop, Tanno applied Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara to the top lashes and Feather Noir Ultra-Skinny Lash discovering mascara to the bottom lashes for drama.
The cheeks and lips held their own with Air Blush Soft Glow Duo in 500 Lush & Libido on the apples of Gaga’s cheeks for a soft rose color that’s feminine and natural for a performance. As for her pucker, Tanno used beauty lip lock moisture balm to hydrate and moisturize, and followed with Le Marc Lip Crème Lipstick in Dashing 206. Tanno finished off the look with a touch of Enamored Hi-Shine Gloss Lip Lacquer Lipgloss in 332.

When it comes to Gaga’s look, “she has a say in everything. She’s a very hands-on person. Everything we do is really a collaboration. We’ve worked together for so long. We can read each other’s minds,” says Tanno.
And she looked no further than Gaga for her inspiration. “The first day of rehearsals, I’d already seen swatches of her costume,” says Tanno. “It was about honoring her career. We worked together on choosing the tones. It was beautiful eyeshadow and liner and a beautiful red mouth. We wanted her to look iconic and beautiful. It’s never — do whatever you want. She’s very hands-on.”
And after it was over, the entire team let out a big collective breath. “It was ridiculous. We went back to the dressing room. It’s over so fast. We were so floored. There were tears of joy. We were all in a little bit of shock. We hugged and cried,” says Tanno.
