Alicia Keys uses natural deodorant
We already know that Alicia Keys is a card-carrying member of the No Makeup Movement. And thanks to James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke,” Keys also recently got to express some feelings about natural deodorant — in song.
Corden challenged Keys and John Legend to sing out everyday sentences. (Somehow Legend made even the phrase “If your erection lasts over four hours, call a doctor” sound classy and romantic in song.) Alicia’s challenge was to sing the phrase “Natural deodorant makes promises it can’t keep.”
Of course, being Alicia Keys, the singer actually does wear natural deodorant. “I use natural deodorant, and me and my husband talk about this all the time,” she said with a laugh. “Anytime he asks to borrow my deodorant, he is so upset at me at the end of the day.”
As Swizz Beatz apparently knows all too well, not all natural deodorants are created equal. Most non-natural deodorants are also antiperspirants that are made with aluminum, an ingredient that has been inconclusively linked to toxicity. They can also be harsh on the skin — even the non-natural deodorants that claim to be “for sensitive skin” leave this writer with hives after a few days of use. As in the rest of the growing natural beauty industry, the hunt for a natural yet effective deodorant is on.
If you — like Keys — are ready to make the switch away from traditional antiperspirants to natural deodorants, we don’t want you to be upset at the end of the day. Here are a few of our favorite natural choices:
? EO Certified Organic Deodorant Spray ($6.99) Formulated to attack underarm bacteria (gross) at the source, the spray uses natural scents like lavender and tea tree to keep you feeling fresh. For midday touch-ups, EO also has organic underarm wipes to tuck in your bag.
? Meow Meow Tweet Baking Soda Free Deodorant Stick ($20) Try this trusty stick format, made of coconut oil and cocoa butter instead of potentially irritating chemicals. Packaged in biodegradable cardboard, it’s a great choice for serious earth-lovers.
? Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant ($8.99) Tried and tested for seven days, our editor says her “pits have never smelled prettier.” The scent gets stronger the more you sweat, so you’re more likely to smell like roses than post-gym B.O. It comes in four scents and one fragrance-free option, from Cedarwood + Juniper to Lavender + Sage.
? Funk Butter ($5.49) This deodorant pot means you’ll get intimate with your pits while using it because the product has to be scooped out and then rubbed on with your fingers. Our senior writer was odor-free after “an entire workday [and] a pretty intense post-office workout at the gym.” The brand recommends starting with the unscented version and working up to coco mango or black cedar fig.
Let us know what your experiences with going natural are in the comments. And, Alicia, if you’re reading, we’ll happily try to stink-proof the Keys-Dean household.
