Amandla Stenberg Talks Gender Identity: "They/Them Makes Me Feel Comfortable"
Amandla Stenberg has always been known for their wise critiques of racial and gender issues and nothing has changed, especially when it comes to their amazing Tumblr blog.
Amandla often answers questions from their fans openly and honestly on the site and when a fan asked what gender pronouns they prefer to be called (since they identify as non-binary),Amandla responded, shedding some light on how they struggle with gender pronouns, especially working in an industry where binary gender roles are still very much enforced.
Immediately fans began to change the pronouns in their Wikipedia page. Although Amandla appreciated the support, they pointed out to fans that changing the pronouns in their Wikipedia could, sadly, affect their career negatively.
Since Amandla has said they identify as a woman sometimes, but not all the time, one follower called Amandla out for, in their opinion, distracting from real gender identity issues by confusing them with issues with western gender norms. Amandla was quick to point out that they're not anyone's martyr - they're just figuring themself out and don't have to answer to anyone.
It's great that Amandla is willing to be honest about their journey to understanding their own identity, letting others who may be facing the same struggles in on it.
