Backstage Secrets: The Trick to ‘Electric but Approachable Highlighter’
New York Fashion Week is literally lit, thanks to the highlighting trend we’re seeing backstage this season. One show in particular where models’ complexions made them look as if they were standing in the moonlight was the Adam Lippes Fall 2017 presentation.
MAC Cosmetics director of makeup artistry Romero Jennings coined the look he created “electric but approachable highlighter.”

What makes this a more attainable take on extreme highlighter is that Jennings strategically powders the bridge and inside of the nose, instead of going bonkers with product, to “make the highlight pop and create a healthy look.”
“It especially [works] with the current boy-grooming trend where everyday makeup colors are monochromatic washes of warm, earthy desert tones,” he said.
Jennings told Yahoo Beauty that the “major key to highlighting starts with exceptional skin.”
For the Adam Lippes presentation, he started with a light exfoliation using MAC Wipes and followed up with Softening Lotion and Care Blends Essential Oil. “This prep polishes/tightens skin, getting it ready for that 3D highlighter,” said Jennings.
Next, he pressed Cream Colour Base to the skin with his fingertips and applied Extra Dimension Skinfinish with a synthetic brush. According to Jennings, the synthetic brush applies the highlighter like a magnet to create a glasslike finish. “You can skate on those cheeks when I am done!” he said.
