“…I haven’t been this nervous in years! #firstdayofschool,” 23-year-old supermodel Karlie Kloss captioned an Instagram shot of herself in front of a New York University building. The 6’1” model was a Victoria’s Secret Angel for two years, travels around the world with BFF Taylor Swift, and bought her first home—a West Village townhouse — at just 21 years old, but in spite of her international fame and success, hitting the books and getting a college degree was always on her mind. In July 2015, Kloss told Self about teaming up with The Flatiron School to fund 21 coding scholarships for girls, in addition to studying alongside the girls herself. Who knew she had such a tech-savvy side? “I hope we’ll be able to change at least one girl’s choice of what she studies, or maybe even just the way she thinks about building her own idea into a company,” Kloss told Self. “That’s how I measure success.”
Kloss, well known for being a beauty chameleon, from sultry looks in Vogue Italia to sporty looks for Nike, kept her back-to-school look clean-cut and preppy. On her first day, she he wore strappy sandals, cuffed jeans, a simple white collared shirt, bare makeup, and loose, straight hair. At NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study, she plans to study, well, anything that she wants. “I want to study computer science. I want to study psychology. I’m fascinated by space. I want to study art history,” she told Self.

Kloss joins a legion of models who took breaks from their full-time modeling careers — or somehow balanced the two commitments — to pursue more school. “Eventually I would like to make it to Harvard Business School. I’m a very disciplined student. When I’m in that environment, I’m totally focused,” she told WWD in March 2015. She told WWD that two of her role models are Cindy Crawford, who was high school valedictorian and pursued a chemical engineering degree at Northwestern, and Christy Turlington, who is a Gallatin alumna and holds a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. Other models who hold college degrees include Cameron Russell (Columbia), Lisa Cant (Columbia), Brooke Shields (Princeton), Joan Smalls (Interamerican University of Puerto Rico), Edie Campbell (Courtauld), Sara Ziff (Columbia), and Lily Cole (Cambridge). Kloss is in good company amongst fashion’s brainiest beauties.
