Beauty Crush: Phoebe Philo

British fashion designer Phoebe Philo is a woman who makes her own rules. In an industry that is about self-promotion, she is famously press shy. She doesn’t wear makeup. She left a high profile job as Creative Director of the French fashion brand Chloé to focus on her family. When she reemerged as creative director of French label Céline three years later in 2008, Phoebe decided not to relocate her family to Paris working from London instead. With three children and a husband, she is clear what her priorities are, and she does things her way.

Phoebe always looks simply chic—done in a modern undone way, her hair cut is simple, perfect, and enviable. With fashion, Phoebe doesn’t follow trends she makes them. You won’t find the color of the moment in her collection—but instead lots of gray, navy, cream, and black. It’s a palette that makes dressing easy. No worrying about what matches, it all works. She’s clearly keeping modern, busy women in mind when she is designing. The look is slightly androgynous, understated, and all about the cut. Her clothes are designed to let the woman wearing them stand out. A simple button down shirt makes you feel like you—you’re not in costume when you wear her clothes. Phoebe has said that she wants the women who wear her designs to feel confident and strong. A woman after my own heart.
