Beauty Icons Reveal Their Own Beauty Icons

All the presenters at this week’s L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth Awards—Blake Lively, Eva Longoria, Julianne Moore, Diane Keaton, and Andie MacDowell—are iconic beauties in their own right, admired by millions of adoring fans. I wondered, Who did they once admire? At the Pierre Hotel, I asked them which stars they looked up to when they were growing up. Julianne Moore, who was my high-school homecoming date in Falls Church, Virginia, admitted she once loved Farrah Fawcett. Ironically, on the afternoon of our homecoming date, Julie’s hairdresser unexpectedly snipped a single feathered Farrah Fawcett bang into her long, red hair. Julie wasn’t pleased.
Who Were Your Beauty Icons Growing Up?
Julianne Moore: ”Lauren Hutton. She was so beautiful! And the models when I was a kid, Karen Graham, she was the Estée Lauder lady. Farrah Fawcett, Ali MacGraw. I used to have a crooked tooth in the front of my mouth, and my dad used to tell me I looked like Ali MacGraw to make me feel better before I got braces.”
Blake Lively: "Jane Fonda is a woman who wasn’t just beautiful and elegant and talented. This is a woman who has made a huge impact on the world. When you think of a woman of worth, you think of Jane Fonda. And my mom is someone who just did whatever inspired her. I like the women who never sit back and say, ‘I’m done; I’m good.’ And you see that with the women who changed the world. They’re not complacent, and that’s pretty cool."

Diane Keaton: ”When I was really young, Doris Day—I just loved her. She was a singer. And then when I got more mature, it was Audrey Hepburn. And now it’s all of these young women.”
Mika Brezinski: "Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, and I always lovedCharlie’s Angels. I always did that pose with the gun. I didn’t have a poster, but I thought they were all cool. I watched the show, and if you know me, I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I got Charlie’s Angels. I later met Jaclyn Smith, and she’s a neat woman. Really down-to-earth and cool.”
Andie MacDowell: ”When I was young, I was kind of a tomboy. I didn’t really think about beauty. I was thinking more about climbing trees. I did love Elizabeth Taylor. And I loved Jane Fonda. I love her now—I still look up to her. I love the way she can talk about sex.”

Eva Longoria: "I didn’t grow up with celebrity culture. We had one TV with three channels. We never went to the movies. For me, it was always my family—my mom, my sisters, my aunts. For me, it was my oldest sister, who was special needs; she was definitely a woman of worth who influenced my life tremendously. And everybody who surrounded me was educated and independent and smart. And I remember thinking that was normal."
Hoda Kotb: ”I had Erik Estrada posters up all over my room. I guess it was Laurie Partridge. What a sad childhood. And I did meet Estrada. That was great. But you remember the poster, and it’s never quite what you remember when you were a kid. But it’s still pretty awesome.”
Aimee Mullins: ”I went for major camp, like Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra; I went for Veronica Lake. I went for Marlene Dietrich, Katharine Hepburn. Those are the women I love.”
