Bryce Dallas Howard’s Secret to Perfect Selfies
Celebrities get paid millions to promote products on social media, so when a famous face does it for free, we’re listening.
On Monday, Bryce Dallas Howard shared the secret to a killer selfie: The Makeup Light, a portable LED light panel that mimics the effects of natural daylight. “This amazing, #nofilter selfie was taken with @themakeuplight,” Howard tweeted to her 71 million followers. “Now how do I get someone to follow me around with one of these? #NotAnAd.”

The starter kit retails for $360 (the luxe version is $1,400) and includes a “flicker-free” dimmer switch so light isn’t compromised while the camera clicks. And while it is portable, the kit includes multiple pieces of gear, likely appealing only to the most serious selfie snappers. Blake Lively and makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury are also fans.
In a post-selfie era, we have the Kardashians to thank for teaching us the basics. Kim, aka the selfie queen, has long sung the praises of soft, natural light for its flattering glow and ability to minimize blemishes. In January 2016, Kim introduced us to LuMee, a $50 light-up phone case, by way of Hillary Clinton.
While appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Clinton described snapping selfies with Kardashian, saying, “First of all, she was very nice and of course when she says to me, ‘Can we take a selfie?’ I said, ‘Hello, of course.’ I mean that’s like an obvious answer. She takes out her phone, and she presses the button — I’ve never seen this anywhere else. She pulls it out, it has lights all the way around it, like, little tiny, tiny light bulbs.”
In response, Kardashian tweeted, “On the Ellen Show today Hilary Clinton talks about how she never looked better in our perfectly lit selfie! #LUMEE

In December 2015, Beyoncé’s stylist Ty Hunter launched the $50 Ty-Lite phone case with three adjustable light settings (cool, warm, and brilliant), while Ring Lights ($229) — literally rings of light equipped with camera mounts — are popular among beauty vloggers.
Other celebs improvise, such as Kylie Jenner, who has a selfie lighting station in the “glam room” of her home, and model Alessandra Ambrosia, who surreptitiously holds a small light under her cellphone. Hey, whatever works!
