Buy Your Wig on Amazon? Yep. Here’s Why.
After always having fairly long and healthy relaxed hair, I was the one person who never wanted to go natural. It wasn’t until I moved to New York City that the condition of my locks started to change.
In 2015, I began experiencing severe scalp inflammation. I went to a dermatologist, who diagnosed me with seborrheic dermatitis and suggested I take a break from getting relaxers until my scalp was under control.
After using a variety of medicated shampoos and receiving cortisone injections into my scalp, it was time to stop chemically straightening my hair and begin transitioning to natural.
Everyone’s natural hair journey is different. Some people just go for it with the big chop — cutting all their relaxed hair off and starting over. As for myself, I decided to braid my hair and wear wigs.
Wearing wigs is a great way to protect your hair from heat during the long transition process or even if you just want a new look. I have a few custom-made wigs, but if I were to buy a new one every time I wanted to change my hairstyle, I could probably have a few pairs of Manolo’s in my closet.
The wig game changed for me when I discovered Amazon as the ultimate resource. But I know what you’re probably thinking: “Amazon for wigs?”
Trust me, Amazon is the hair extensions plug, and here are three reasons why:
1. Ready-to-wear
When you’re ready to hit the town and have limited time to do your hair, just pull this Bobbi Boss wig ($30) right out of the box and you’re good to go. Don’t worry, as you won’t have to spend hours straightening this wig, because it’s styled super sleek!
Tucked inside this blunt bob unit are adjustable straps that allow you to tailor the wig to fit properly onto your head. There’s no need to figure out your head measurements; you’ll get the custom wig without the custom high price.
2. Low price, luxe look
When searching for a new wig to purchase, synthetic hair was initially not an option for me — I always thought it looked too cheap. But I was definitely wrong, because the hair industry has evolved. The majority of the wigs on Amazon are synthetic, which means they are not human hair and will only cost you between $20 and $40.
Although these wigs are not real hair, they definitely have a lavish look and still can be curled (at a low heat setting) and styled. One of my favorite luxe wigs is from Freetress Equal ($24), which I wear when I want to channel my inner Real Housewives of Atlanta star.
3. Low maintenance
If you want luscious curls without a curling iron, 5i Beauty ($27) has the perfect unit for you. The best thing about this wig is you don’t have to risk getting heat damage for this playful look.
These curls will continue to bounce no matter how windy or humid it is outside. Just make sure to run your fingers through the wig each day and separate the curls to prevent tangling. Synthetic hair doesn’t last very long, so you’ll get at least a full month of wear, and then on to your next look!
Amazon houses many wig vendors, so when looking for the ideal wig, make sure to read the reviews and do your research. No matter if you’re transitioning or natural, or you want a different hair color or some added length, have some fun and try something new.
To maintain your wig, keep these four tips in mind:
Invest in a wig stand. This should cost you no more than six bucks, and it will help to maintain the overall shape of your extensions.
Use a plastic bristle brush (preferably with loop bristles) to detangle and add volume to wigs with straighter textures.
Avoid applying hair products to synthetic wigs, as the fibers won’t absorb the formulas like human hair, and this can only lead to knots or, even worse, matted locks.
Don’t submerge your wig in water, because this can alter the overall texture.
