What Cindy Crawford Really Thinks of Today's Insta-Famous Models
Although Rebecca Romijn does not consider Instagram models to be "true supermodels," some other supes of her generation think it's great that a large social media presence is a part of the job today.
"I'm so jealous, because I feel they have this direct way to communicate with their audience that my generation didn't have," Cindy Crawford told Cosmopolitan.com at the Met Gala on Monday. "I think it's a responsibility, but it's also a great tool, because they really can be their own publicists. They can present themselves the way that they want to be presented."
Carolyn Murphy says that she herself feels the pressure to build a social-media following. "I just got reprimanded last week for not Instagramming enough," she said. "And I thought that seniority ruled. I thought, Well, if I'm almost 43, isn't that Kendall Jenner's job?" Her current Instagram following is 161,000, and Murphy says her 15-year-old daughter also gets on her about upping her social media game.
"It's uncomfortable for me that we kind of have to manufacture moments," Amber Valletta said, "even though sometimes they are real moments. "But at the same time, these girls are really smart and clever, and they figured out how to be brands."
Still, Valletta added: "No matter how many followers you have, Christy Turlington will always be Christy Turlington."
