#CopyThat: Tracee Ellis Ross’s ’70s Glam
Tracee Ellis Ross is the very definition of black girl magic. The Black-ish star had an historical win at the 74th Golden Globe Awards by becoming the first black woman to win Best Actress in a TV series, Musical or Comedy in 35 years (Debbie Allen won in 1983 for Fame).
We’re pretty sure she made her mother Diana Ross even prouder by channeling the pop diva’s iconic ’70s style. But instead of big, natural curls and a nude lip, she went for a textured ponytail and matte red lipstick.
In this #CopyThat tutorial, Stunning Braids author and hairstylist Monaè Everett and makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes collaborated on a stunning reinterpretation of Ross’s Globes glam. Check out the video above for hair extension secrets that will change your life, and read below for all the steps and products used.
Step-by-step instructions
1. Wet natural hair texture. Pro tip: A conditioner or leave-in treatment will help to hydrate dry locks.
2. Separate hair into two sections, clipping away the crown area.
3. Apply Eco Styler Moroccan Argan Oil Styling Gel, and brush back section into a ponytail.
4. Use ample Kérastase Fibre Architecte Hair Serum on the front section, before brushing into one pony. Pro tip: A natural bristle brush will make it even sleeker.
5. Place a wide headband (or tie a satin scarf) around hairline to keep smooth.
6. Braid ponytail and secure end with a black elastic.
7. Wrap 18-inch deep wave dark brown AB Hair extensions around braid and secure with bobby pins. Pro tip: Mix in medium-brown extensions for natural depth.
8. Use pick to tease curls and boost volume.
9. Conceal the edge of the hair extensions by wrapping a small piece around where they meet the ponytail elastic.
10. Remove headband and set hairstyle with Redken Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist.
11. Apply two coats of Chanel Le Volume de Chanel Mascara in black to top and bottom lashes.
12. Play up your pout with Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Cayenne.
