CR Fashion Book Celebrates 'Individual Character'

The newest issue of CR Fashion Book, the biannual publication created by the former editor in chief of Vogue Paris, Carine Rotifeld, is all about “celebrating individual character over pure good looks.” For the three different covers of the publication’s sixth issue, Roitfeld enlisted Karl Lagerfeld and Anthony Maule as photographers and cast a group of models that represent her view of beauty for 2015—that includes Kitty Hayes (with braces!), Stella Lucia, and Yahoo Beauty favorite, Issa Lish.

Titled “Jolie Laide” (a phrase that translates to “pretty ugly”) after a Serge Gainsbourg song, Roitfeld explains that the issue is about the vague line between temptation and repulsion that drives fashion at its core. “To succeed as jolie laide, one has to be confident,” says the editor.

From the covers (this may be the only time you see a girl wearing Versace and braces on the newsstand) to an interview with Anjelica Huston to artwork curated by Kanye West, the new issue is about beauty with an edge and a point of view. ”In fashion, it’s always better to be an interesting person than a beautiful one,” says Roitfeld. “Character is much more fascinating than pure good looks.”
