Deepica Mutyala Learns a Valuable Lesson on Natural Hair After Her ‘Today’ Show Flub
Last week, beauty YouTuber Deepica Mutyala made headlines after a segment on the Today show demonstrating easy summer hairstyles you can do in a minute. Everything went along likely as planned until she got to a black model with natural hair, and let’s just say … the style Mutyala created didn’t go over well.
Viewers watched in horror as she tugged at model Malyia McNaughton’s tresses, which went from defined curls to something, well, not so appealing. It was painfully clear that Mutyala wasn’t familiar with textured hair. But she didn’t let the criticisms of her Today show flub get her down — she decided to do something about it and educate herself on black women’s hair. And luckily for us, she recorded the whole thing.
Mutyala teamed up with McNaughton, TV host Kamie Crawford, comedian and content creator Akilah Hughes, and Tiarra Monet, the owner of Crowned by Monet hair bar. Filmed at Monet’s salon, Mutyala held a Q&A with the girls, educating herself on natural hair care and discussing products, hair tools, and maintenance. One of the biggest lessons learned? Styling natural hair definitely takes more than a mere minute.

At the end of the video, the girls style Mutyala’s hair in similar fashion to her Today show mishap, adding a humorous slant to what was an unfortunate situation.
This video is an example of how important education is when it comes to the beauty world. Now that Mutyala has a better understanding of black women’s hair, in the future she’ll have a reference point when it comes to styling. It also goes to show what good can happen when people who are familiar with black hair educate those who aren’t, instead of simply getting upset at their unfamiliarity. We need to learn from each other in order to get better, and here is a perfect example of what happens when we come together with our differences.
