Designer Rachel Zoe's Beauty Routine Went Bananas After Kids

Rachel Zoe knows Fashion Week is nothing less than bananas (the designer, celebrity stylist, and former reality star’s favorite catchphrase). In addition to the week’s standard clothing-induced chaos, Zoe has her hands full putting on her own fashion show, styling two clients, and being mom to her two little ones under the age of three.
I spoke with Zoe backstage before her New York Fashion Week Show, sponsored by FIJI Water. Since her departure from The Rachel Zoe Project, the blonde firecracker has barely sat still (or slept). Zoe talked about her dream NYFW beauty regimen. “The one I would like, is soaking my face in moisture masks and eye masks and tons of layers of moisture and balms,” she admits. “And lots of sleep—but that’s not reality.”
So what is reality for the chic, but totally sleep-deprived designer? Zoe dished on her favorite products, the decade she’d rather not revisit beautywise, and how her kids have changed her beauty routine.
Hilary Sheinbaum: What is your usual beauty regimen?
Rachel Zoe: Not a lot of sleep! I do a lot of cooling gels from Skyn Iceland or Tatcha. I use a ton of organic products from ARCONA . I slather my face morning, noon, and night in moisture. It’s the most important thing, especially when I am in New York. The things I can’t live without are Charlotte Tilbury concealer, a good black liquid liner from NARS and always some kind of deep berry wine lip stain.
HS: Is there one item you can’t live without?
RZ: Charlotte Tilbury’s shadow sticks, in every color – specifically in Black Diamonds. It literally smokes up your whole eye in two seconds, or you can use it thin for a little line. I’m obsessed with it.
HS: How has your beauty regimen changed since having kids?
RZ: Everything’s changed since I’ve had kids! It used to be a 50-minute routine, and now it’s five. Everything is consolidated. I’m doing my makeup in the car, usually on my way somewhere.
HS: Did you recently switch out your products for more organic ones, or was that always your thing?
RZ: It started when I was pregnant with my first son. Everything organic I can get my hands on – no chemicals.
HS: What’s your Fashion Week beauty regimen?
RZ: Oh my God. I just keep putting Honest Company’s Healing Balm everywhere. I use Charlotte Tilbury’s illuminator sometimes around my cheekbones, just to wake me up. I always use a lipstick – a good, berry Bordeaux red to wake up your face.
HS: What makes you feel confident?
RZ: Honestly, if I feel good in my clothes, if I have a great day with my kids, if I did something that I’m proud of at work – that makes me feel good. Confidence is something I’m always striving for, just like everyone else.
HS: Have you ever had any beauty mishaps?
RZ: Oh yeah. The whole decade of the 80s was one big beauty mishap. I would never visit that again – anything about it.
HS: Is there one bad look that stands out?
RZ: Too much makeup. I wear half the amount of the makeup now than I did in the 80s. And my hair was triple the size!
