The Evolution of the Beehive in 56 Years
Margaret Vinci Heldt, the hairstylist that created the beehive in 1960, died yesterday at age 98. Heldt’s inspiration behind the beehive was a conical black velvet hat, which she mimicked with hair on a mannequin head. She created the style at the request of a hairstyling magazine that published images of it in February 1960, according to Time. The magazine described the style as a “tall wrap-around crown, creating a circular silhouette with high-rise accents.” It has since been worn by some of our favorite beauty icons. Here are the most memorable beehives since 1960.
