Fall Beauty Trend: Brick Red Lips Are In

I am someone who wears red lipstick all year round, but there is something about the fall air that makes the color feel extra appropriate for these cooler months. That is probably why we saw so many brick red pouts on the fall runways, from Dolce & Gabbana to Carolina Herrera and Phillip Lim. Of course, finding and applying the perfect brick red lip requires a little bit of work, so I asked two of my favorite makeup artists, Fiona Stiles (her clients include Emily Ratajkowski and Elizabeth Banks) and Lisa Aharon (she works with Florence Welch) to give me their tips and tricks for nailing red lips.
Prep your lips
“Always prep the lips with a light scrub and lip moisturizer first,” says Aharon. Doing this will help even out the texture of your lips, leading to the most even application of color. Try The Lip Scrub by Sara Happ in peppermint ($24) followed by a layer of Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 ($7). Aharon’s suggests blotting in the balm with a tissue before applying your color to avoid streaks and to keep the color from getting diluted.
Select the right formula
For long lasting color, formula is key. Keep in mind that anything shiny will be more emollient and will wear off more quickly. Stiles recommends going for a creamy or matte formula for the most longevity, but in the end, your own personal preference is key. “You need to consider your style, skin tone and personality when choosing your formula.” says Stiles.
Match your shade to your skin tone
When it come to mastering the brick red trend, your skin tone plays a role in selecting the correct shade. Stiles recommends looking for a red with some brown in it to master the brick red trend. “It looks very chic and is more ‘adult’ than a red lip. It’s like red’s more serious older sister,” she says. If you have darker skin, you can select a shade with a lot of brown in it, but fair skin tones should look for something lighter to avoid looking too goth. “Be sure not to go too dark as a dark lip will make your lips look small and pinched,” Stiles cautions.
Grab a lip brush
When it comes to application, Aharon relies on a lip brush to get even color, opaque color and a more precise application. She says to start at the cupid’s bow to get the shape right, moving outwards. Then start at the center of your bottom lip and work your way out to the outer edges of your mouth.
Finish with lip liner
Use lip liner as a final step to fill in and sharpen your edges. Aharon’s says the corners of your mouth tend to get neglected, so use a liner to fill in those spots. “Using a matching lip liner over or under the lipstick will also help with longevity,” she says.
