Finally, a Celebrity Hairstylist Created Products You Can Afford
It’s no secret that everybody wants perfectly imperfect hair. Famed hairstylist Jen Atkin brought us the tools to get that “I woke up like this” look at home, but with prices nearing the $35 range, most of us are at a loss. Enter Kristin Ess, co-founder of The Beauty Department and stylist to celebrities like Halle Berry, Lucy Hale, Lauren Conrad, and Jenna Dewan Tatum, to name a few.

Ess is known for creating effortless, messy waves, and now the 20-year vet has formulated the products you need to recreate the look for yourself, with prices you can afford. The 15-product line has a solution — or two — for every hair blunder, and nothing costs more than $14. Products all contain a newly formulated strengthening complex called Zip-Up, which contains Kerabead microcapsules and conditioning ingredients like chia seeds, pea protein, and marine algae.
For Ess, the collection is a long time coming. She shared on Instagram that she’s been silently working on it for two years. “There is so much amazing product out there, but each brand only has a couple of hero products to me,” Ess says of the inspiration behind her collection. “I’ve never found one line that has everything I need for that modern, perfectly imperfect hair that I love so much. I wanted a full line of heroes!”

And who better to recommend a styling product or treatment than somebody who’s made a career out of touching hair? “I’m a hairstylist and I think it’s always good to have products made by someone who does hair for a living. I’m creating these based around the needs of the clients that sit in my chair, not just a study,” Ess says. “The products perform at a very high level for what they cost. I would stand these up against any high-end brand with confidence.”
To get acquainted with the collection, Ess recommends starting with styling products for your personal hair needs, or get a “clean canvas” using Ess’s favorite combo: her new shampoo, conditioner, and leave in. Find Kristen Ess Hair products on Target’s website come January 15 or any Target store on January 22.
