How to Get a Foolproof Smoky Eye

For fall, we love the versatile look of a grey smoky eye. It’s a little subtler than using black shadow and works on a wide range of skin tones. A popular and versatile style, the smoky eye has been back in the spotlight ever since Amy Schumer thanked her makeup artist, Andréa Tiller, on stage at the Emmys for giving her the look. We reached out to Tiller and makeup artist Fiona Stiles to give us their foolproof tips and rounded up our favorite fall smoky shadow palettes so you can DIY at home.

Prime your lids

“For any smoky eye application, I would start with an eyeshadow primer for long wear, to prevent creasing, and to prevent shadow residue from dropping on upper cheek bones or under eyes,” says Tiller. She likes Urban Decay Anti-Aging Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($24) when doing a subtle wash of color and a tinted cream shadow, like Laura Mercier’s Caviar Stick ($28) as a primer for a more intense smoky eye.

Blend strategically

When it comes to a smoky eye, blending is the most important step. After applying your shadow, be sure to blend the edges using a blending brush or your finger. Stiles advises to start slow, and build your color gradually the shadow from looking too harsh. “If you have smaller eyes, be sure to blur and blend out the edges to give the illusion of a bigger eye,” she says.

Add liner

To amp up your look, Tiller suggests adding a black or dark grey liner to your waterline. “If you want more definition and drama, take the same pencil liner and frame your eyes with it by drawing a thin line on the top and bottom of your lash lines,” says Tiller. Her favorite is Urban Decay 24/7 Perversion Eye Pencil ($24), which is waterproof — making it perfect to use on your waterline.

Don’t forget your lashes

Finish the look with by curling your lashes and adding a few coats of your favorite mascara. “When you do a darker eye, it can close up the shape of the eye,” says Stiles. “Curling your lashes insures a wide, open eye.” Apply mascara to top and bottom lashes and hit the town!
