In recent years, the beauty routines of French women have become a bit of an obsession. How exactly do they keep their skin looking so fresh, their red lipstick so perfect, and their smokey eyes so sultry? Although I’m convinced it’s something in their water, I asked makeup artist Nick Barose to walk me through the look he created for French actress Judith Godrèche for the premiere of her newest film, The Overnight.
“French women love to look natural!” says the star, who was just called one of the year’s biggest breakout stars by Time Magazine. “They love everything that could be related to bitten lips or pink cheeks because you were walking in the cold.” Barose, who loves the French beauty aesthetic, played off of Godrèche’s chic black and white Saint Laurent suit (très chic) by giving the actress perfectly rosy cheeks and those just bitten lips.
To get the look, he used a bright cream blush on the apples of the cheeks and blended it out using a Beauty Blender. “Brighter cream blush is more versatile because you can really blend it down so you get the pop but it’s still sheer and pretty,” says Barose. Try Lancôme Blush Subtil Crème in Brise Rosee to get that au naturel flush.
“I love red lips with not too much eye makeup,” says Godrèche. For eyes, Barose kept it easy and laid back by using a brown liner along the lash line and adding a few coats of black mascara. Then it was on to the lips. “I opted for a sheer red lip that is bright but not in your face,” says Barose. “It has the vibe of ‘I care, but I don’t really care’, which I find so attractive because it’s not high maintenance.” He used Lancôme Shine Lover Lipstick in O My Rouge to give lips a just bitten wash of color. Until someone starts bottling up that Parisian water and shipping it stateside, I’ll be following Barose’s tips for perfecting the French look.
