Meet the Pop-Artist Painting Taylor Swift, Cara Delevingne, & Christy Turlington

When artist Mark Boomershine is deciding on a subject to paint, there is one characteristic that links all of his pieces. “I find people that have a positivity to them,” says the Atlanta-based artist. Boomershine is known for painting iconic images of celebrities including Lady Gaga, Mick Jagger, and Wonder Woman. “It makes my job easier as an artist to paint subjects who people know and admire,” he explains.

In a new exhibit organized by ArtMuse and Voltz Clarke at the Surrey Hotel in Manhattan opening May 14th, Boomershine unveils a new crop of celebrity portraits including Taylor Swift, Sting, and Cara Delevingne. “We were looking for people who were beautiful and intriguing to look at, but had more depth. When you peel back the layers there would continue to be something there.” He gravitated towards Emma Watson after hearing her speak on women’s equality at the U.N., and he admires the work Turlington does to help mothers with her global charity Every Mother Counts.

After Boomershine decides on a subject, he does extensive research, delving into interviews and profiles to find out more. While he uses photos as reference, he creates his works from his imagination. “I always capture the eyes,” says Boomershine. “I want people to look into their eyes and get a feel for who the person may be.”
