For Game of Thrones fans, Sunday night (April 12) can’t come fast enough. That’s because the mega hit medieval-fantasy HBO show is back for Season 5 and promises to deliver more intrigue, battles, plots, affairs, and dragons. And if you happen to be the mother of dragons, Daenerys Targaryen a.k.a. Khaleesi (played by the divine Emilia Clarke), you also have a devoted fan base (we’re talking 7.1 million viewers for the Season 4 finale) that’s cheering your march on the throne in King’s Landing.
The show’s costumes have drawn comparisons to designer looks on the runway, but what about beauty? If there were any cast that’s nailing spring’s “no makeup” look, it would be the “bare-faced” beauties of GoT. We caught up with Jane Walker, the show’s department head makeup artist who nabbed an Emmy last year for Outstanding Makeup For A Single-Camera Series, to find out how she creates Khaleesi’s barely-there look.
“Good skin is the best base for the ‘no makeup’ look,” Walker says. She likes products by Dermalogica and Bioderma to prep the skin, but warns: “Don’t use too much moisturizer or your base will float on your skin, but do use one with a high SPF.” On Khaleesi, Walker applies Armani Luminous Silk foundation. “It covers imperfections, but allows your own skin to come through,” she says. Walker also recommends investing in a quality concealer. “Very few of us have perfect skin,” she says. “We use Dermacolor to hide spots and blemishes.”

To keep it natural, she keeps powder in check. Instead, “take away any shine in the T-zone with blotting papers, but leave some sheen on the cheek bones to highlight your bone structure,” she says. “You can shade under your cheek bones with a darker color to contour.”
She also prefers creams to powder when applying blush, using Stila and Bobbi Brown products. “It keeps that dewy look,” says Walker. “Choose colors that resemble your natural blush.”
For eyes, Walker accents lids with “nude and taupe eyeshadow from the Bobbi Brown range,” sweeping the shadow into the socket but forgoing liner. “Mascara should be a ‘no buildup’ type,” says Walker, who uses Lancôme on set. “Scrape any excess off the brush back into the tube before you apply to get a thin wash of color on the lashes,” she advises. Lastly, “keep lips soft and a little glossy with Lucas Papaw ointment,” she says. Now you’re ready to slay your enemies.
