This Girl Curled Her Hair Using Dozens of Tampons, Because Why Not?
If you’ve ever watched a beauty tutorial for curling your hair, you’re pretty familiar with how it begins: plug in a curling iron and…
But vlogger grav3yardgirl (real name: Rachel Meyer, sometimes known as Bunny Meyer online) went in a totally different direction. She knows that a curling iron is one of the most efficient ways to curl your hair, but that hasn’t stopped her from testing out totally ridiculous techniques, like curling her hair around marshmallows and Cheetos. While the curls were beautiful, the lingering stench of artificial cheese was not, so she tried another method.
Last week, Bunny moved onto a bigger challenge: could she create a head full of pin curls with just a jumbo box of tampons and a pack and a half of bobby pins?
Of course, no one should actually ever attempt this in real life. Tampons cost approximately one zillion dollars (seriously, why???) and, as Bunny quickly found out, are not easy to use. Remember the first time your mom handed you a tampon and you had no idea how to actually get that thing in there? It turns out that putting them in your hair is just as confusing.
After unwrapping dozens of tampons, she rolled thin sections of slightly damp hair around each one and used two or more bobby pins to secure the coil to her scalp. As you can probably imagine, Bunny found it tough to pin them to her scalp, and they kept sliding out of her hair. Going with “the flow” turned out to be pretty tough.
But eventually, she had a (very heavy) head full of sanitary products.
“Don’t ever do this,” she says in the video. “It is so time-consuming. It is so difficult. And there’s no reason a tampon should ever touch your ear. It’s very hard to concentrate when tampon strings keep tickling your nose.”
She dried her hair for 40 minutes until it was hot, then unrolled the tampons. And… voila! Springy, bouncy ringlets that look identical to those curly ribbons you attach to birthday gifts.
While she had some trouble with the back of her hair (not to mention making room for all the tampons), she was pretty pleased with the effect overall. “Tampons make wonderful curls,” she admits, noting that this was the most time-consuming way you could possibly go about creating this look.
If you have a box of tampons lying around and way too much free time on your hand, go ahead, try out the technique for yourself. As for me, I’ll be sticking to my 10-minute curling iron routine.
