Here’s What MAC’s Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours Look Like on Dark Skin

When I commit to a lipstick, I really commit. All it takes is the right shade, finish, and someone saying, “You look great!” for me to keep a tube in heavy rotation (or at the bottom of my handbag).

Lately, I’ve been into highly pigmented matte lippies that are a bizarre cross between a gloss and a lipstick. I find that this formula makes my lips appear fuller and doesn’t require a ton of touchups. So I was beyond ecstatic to receive a wooden box containing 12 new MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours.

The latest additions to the Retro Matte line include soft nudes like Café Au Chic and Flesh Stone, muted pinks and roses such as Ladybegood and Topped With Brandy, and rich browns and reds accurately named Chocotease and Carnivorous. There’s even a blackened teal called Young Attitude that will probably be my go-to this spring.

The new demure and daring shades offers greater options for people with cool or warm undertones. Plus, its creamy texture glides on effortlessly thanks to the doe foot applicator and dries down to a velvety soft finish.

I selected seven of the MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours to swatch onto my dark skin.

My first impression of the gray-beige Café Au Chic is that this is probably something Nicki Minaj would wear … back in the day. While it wasn’t the most flattering on my complexion, I could definitely use it as a simple highlighter in the middle of my lips when worn with deep chocolate brown color like Ess-Presso.

So Me, Uniformly Famous, Carnivorous, and Topped With Brandy — lip colors that fall between deep berry and red spectrum on the color wheel — accentuate my warm undertones and make my blush pop.

I must say that I was blown away by the wild-card hue, Young Attitude. I’ve never worn teal lipstick, but I received so many compliments and approving head nods on the train ride home.

Unlike the matte liquid lipsticks by a popular young reality star, these didn’t make my lips feel super dry underneath or so stripped of moisture that talking, eating, or smiling was impossible. However, it does take roughly 10 seconds for the liquid lipstick to fully dry. I’d also recommend patting it onto the center of lips instead of swiping to achieve a seamless application.

To sum up my review of MAC’s new liquid lip colors, I quote rapper Lil Mama, who famously said, “They say my lip gloss is popping. My lip gloss is cool!”
