When reality darling Lauren Conrad waltzed into the West Coast Teen Vogue offices, her best friend instantly became her sweet and stylish coworker Whitney Port. It’s hard to believe, but it’s been nine years since The Hills debuted on MTV. At the end of season four, Port got her own spinoff on The City bringing her to New York City. For two years, the show followed our leading lady as she started a gig with fashion powerhouse Diane von Furstenberg and fashion PR shop People’s Revolution.
Since leaving the reality game, she’s launched a lifestyle site WhitneyPort.com and a fashion line (sold at Mixology) called Whitney Eve. Her tropical-inspired summer collection features baseball jackets, track pants, and lots of dresses.
The now 30-year old may not be on TV anymore, but it definitely led her to some happy places. In 2013, she became engaged to Tim Rosenman, who she met while filming (he was an associate producer on The City). But a future husband isn’t the only thing she picked up behind the scenes. She’s learned a lot from her time in front of the camera, too.
Yahoo Beauty: You spent years on The Hills and The City in front of America. How did being on TV and in the public eye affect your confidence?
Whitney Port: When you’re on TV or in the media, it is only natural to pick apart your insecurities.
What insecurities did being on TV exacerbate?
When I started the show I was 22-years-old, so obviously a bit insecure to begin with. I became insecure with weight, especially because the camera really does add weight! Now I just focus on being healthy, but back then it didn’t do the greatest things for my confidence.
How did you overcome those insecurities?
I grew up. I became a woman and realized what is important in life. Not stressing over your vanity, but maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It has definitely helped me to become aware of my health and fitness, which I am actually grateful for. I want to look strong, but most importantly I want to feel strong.
What makes you feel most confident?
Being in healthy relationships and surrounding myself with people who cheer me on as opposed to judging me.
How has your beauty routine changed from your TV days to now?
It really hasn’t changed much! When I was on TV, I tried to keep my look as natural as possible. My motto with beauty and makeup has always been “less is more.”
Are there any beauty looks from your TV days that you look back at in embarrassment?
Definitely! There was a Hills Premiere Party where I had someone do ringlets in my hair. It was awful!
How does your LA beauty routine differ from your New York City routine, if at all?
It really doesn’t differ. In New York City, you want to have as clean skin as possible because of all the harsh toxins in the air. But both climates require a lot of moisturizer and a small amount of makeup.
Do you have a favorite place to shop in either city?
Mixology has carried my line for a number of years now. They have been awesome supporters.
What are three products you always carry with you, and why do you love them?
Lucas Papaw Ointment, because it’s extra moisturizing and can be used on more than just your lips. Visine – it’s an instant refresher when your eyes are feeling dull and tired. And Nivea Hand Cream, to keep my hands moisturized through all the travel that I do
Was there anything you learned beauty-wise from being in the spotlight?
One thing I learned from getting my makeup done a fair amount is to keep you eye cream in the refrigerator. The cold cream will help decrease any puffiness.
