Do Women Pay More for Beauty Products?

Have you ever wandered into the guy’s section of a clothing store and felt like the prices were all just a little lower? Or switched to men’s shaving cream because it’s just a little cheaper? Unfortunately, you’re not imagining it—most products for women do in fact come with a higher price tag. Don’t believe it? Watch the video above, which demonstrates that if it’s pink, it’s probably a few dollars more.
Dubbed the “women’s tax,” it’s yet another example of the gender gap and will make you think twice before reaching for the flowery packaging labeled “For her!” This video by The Daily Share points out that a Schick razor for men is $8.56, while the women’s version rings up at $9.97—a whopping 17% more. Women even pay more for health insurance, under the argument that they live longer than men and will therefore require more care. A study back in 1995 found that women ultimately pay $1,351 more a year for the same products, meaning this isn’t exactly breaking news—it’s just that no one’s been paying the completely irrational and unjustifiable gender-based pricing enough attention.

So far, the only state where this is actually illegal is California, but everywhere else it’s fair game. And this discrepancy comes on top of the fact that women still make only 78 cents for every dollar men earn. This video leaves us with a lot of questions, the main one being: When will women finally catch a (tax) break?
