Justin Bieber: I’m Depressed ‘All The Time’

In a new interview with NME, Justin Bieber told the magazine that he feels depressed “all the time,” according to People. “I feel isolated,“ Bieber told NME. "You’re in your hotel room and there are fans all around, paparazzi following you everywhere, and it gets intense. When you can’t go anywhere or do anything alone you get depressed. I would not wish this upon anyone.” The 21-year-old has been on a public apology tour recently, but this twist reveals what we should have all realized on our own: that growing up in the spotlight does a number on a person, and his not-great actions are likely the result of some pretty mixed up emotions.

Bieber told the magazine he related to what Amy Winehouse experienced when watching her documentary. "People see the glam and the amazing stuff, but they don’t know the other side. This life can rip you apart,“ he shares. "I watched the Amy Winehouse documentary on the plane and I had tears in my eyes because I could see what the media was doing to her, how they were treating her.”
Bieber’s not the first one to draw attention to the isolation that comes with celebrity life (see Jennifer Lawrence’s recent take on it here), and he highlights a very real message: That as much as we see mega-stars as imperturbable, the Biebers of the world are people too, just as easily hurt by hurled insults.
Bieber’s raw statements also remind us that depression comes in all shapes and sizes, and affects all kinds of people, regardless of money or success. (If you or a loved one are struggling with depression, find a list of resources here.)
We’re not saying Bieber’s the next American role model, but a little compassion is in order — for him and all celebrities.
