Kathy Griffin Shaves Her Head to Support Her Sister With Cancer

Kathy Griffin, known for her trademark red hair, has shaved her head in support of her sister, who is battling cancer. And Griffin looks fabulous.

On Monday, journalist Yashar Ali tweeted two photos of the now bald comedian, writing, “In solidarity with her sister, who is going through chemo, @kathygriffin shaved her head.” Ali also prompted his followers to donate to the American Cancer Society.

The last time Griffin took to Twitter was July 28, when she announced that she is no longer under federal investigation for a May social media stunt, which involved her holding a fake, bloody decapitated head depicting President Trump. Griffin maintained that her goal was to mock Trump’s “blood coming out of her whatever” comments about NBC journalist Megyn Kelly, but she was widely condemned on social media and by the first family, which launched a Secret Service investigation into Griffin.

There’s no information about which type of cancer Griffin’s sister has, but in 2014, her brother Gary died of esophageal cancer.

There was an outpouring of support for Griffin’s bold beauty move, even from those with differing political views. And many called Griffin “gorgeous” and “beautiful.”

In June, R&B singer Keke Wyatt, who is currently pregnant with her ninth baby, also shaved her head in solidarity with one of her children, who has been diagnosed with cancer.

In 2012, country singer and American Idol alum Kellie Pickler shaved her head to support her best friend who was suffering from breast cancer. “Cancer does not discriminate,” Pickler told GMA. “If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it.”

And of course, there have been lots of news stories about awesome everyday folks who shaved their heads for their sick loved ones. In 2014, after a woman named Gerdi McKenna was diagnosed with breast cancer and lost her hair due to treatment, 10 of her friends shaved their heads and another chopped off 15 inches of hair. The emotional event was captured by a South African photographer, and was a total surprise to McKenna.

In March, members of a Virginia fire department shaved their heads in honor of their colleague’s toddler Caleb Lambert, who was diagnosed with stage III neuroblastoma. In addition, the fire station raised money for the 3-year-old’s medical expenses and encouraged firefighters around the world to post videos on social media, giving virtual tours to the tot.
