Kesha Dismisses Body Shamers With Gorgeous Bikini Picture

It’s been quite the turbulent year for Kesha. The pop star has been battling an ongoing lawsuit with Sony and her record producer Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, who she claims sexually, physically, and mentally abused her over the years (#FreeKesha!). But thankfully, the star seems to be keeping her head high during such tough times, even taking a quick vacation for some R&R.

While away in Palm Springs, Calif., Kesha posted a flawless black and white bikini picture via her Instagram account, lashing out at social media body shamers with the caption: “not a slave to perfection right now. F*** it. ***body shamers please f*** off ain’t nobody got time for it.”

This was a refreshingly positive post for Kesha, who was treated for anorexia and bulimia back in 2014 — helpful background information since, while she’s obviously speaking to pesky social media trolls, the post seems to stem from a deeper past than that. At the height of Kesha’s eating disorder, her mother came forward in an interview with People Magazine to explain that other than Kesha’s own personal pressures to be skinny, her producer Dr. Luke had been critical about her weight as well, worsening the issue.

This kind of pressure from both social media and her peers was obviously extremely detrimental to Kesha in previous years, and can even have a trickle-down affect on her fans. Claire Mysko, the President and CEO of the National Eating Disorder Association, expands on this fact, telling Yahoo Beauty, “Shaming and criticizing someone based on their body is not only rude, it’s harmful. Bullying, shame, and social pressures to have the ‘ideal’ body can contribute to the development of an eating disorder.” Since Kesha has clearly been the victim of bodying shaming in the past, it’s good to see her response to this kind of negativity has changed.

Kesha isn’t the only celebrity who’s experienced the pressures of body shaming on social media, but she is one of the few to speak out against it. “It’s refreshing to see people like Kesha speaking out against those who think its acceptable to judge someone based on their appearance” Mysko says. “Social media has an immense power to build supportive communities and change the conversation about beauty and body image, and the more people speak out and set a good example, the more we’ll all benefit.” With this in mind, we can’t help to love Kesha’s new outlook on body shaming!
