Men’s Hair in 2016: The Man Bun is Here to Stay

We talk a lot about hair trends for women, from what you can expect to see walking down the street to walking down the red carpet, but what about the dudes? Amy Komorowski, AXE Hair celebrity stylist and groomer to stars like Eddie Redmayne, Adam Driver, and Ryan Reynolds, is the person to ask when it comes to men’s hair trends. Whether she’s prepping a client for a film premiere or a magazine cover, she knows what looks good on Hollywood’s leading actors. For 2016, Komorowski says a lot of the trends that guys have been embracing for the last year or so are here to stay (yes, even the man bun). “I also see guys wearing [their hair] chin length, like a version of a bob or the lob that is so popular with women,” she tells us. “And as an extreme response to long hair and facial hair, you will see more guys buzzing it off, military style.”

Despite the changing styles, the look will remain effortless and natural — we won’t be seeing anything overly styled on the red carpet. But that doesn’t mean an absence of products. Komorowski sees matte styling products as the trend for 2016, like AXE Messy Look: Matte Gel ($7). Matte products (whether it’s a spray, gel, or paste) are great for getting the “I didn’t do a thing” look without the shine.

Below are the trends Komorowski predicts we will keep seeing well into 2016 plus her tips for pulling them off.

The Pompadour: Miguel

Miguel is nominated for two Grammy awards this year, but it’s his pompadour hairstyle from 2012 that makes him a star in our book. Komorowski recommends a pomade like AXE Clean Cut Look: Classic Pomade ($7) or a strong hold gel for maintaining a style like this.

The Man Bun: Jared Leto

It’s the man bun seen ‘round the world. Leto kicked off the man bun trend at the 2014 Golden Globes, with a business in the front, party in the back style bun. To get the look, Komorowski recommends prepping hair with a texturizing cream or a sea salt spray. For dudes, we like Bumble and bumble Surf Spray ($27).

The Undercut and Fade: David Beckham

David Beckham has already proved he looks good no matter what hairstyle he’s sporting, but we like him best with this undercut. This versatile look can be styled with a number of different products. Pick your favorite gel, cream or paste to slick hair back and keep strands in place.

The Bob: Chris Hemsworth

The “Thor” star has one of the greatest man-bobs of all-time. Style it with a paste like R+Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste ($28) for the right amount of bedhead texture.

The Buzz: Zayn Malik

Zayn Malik knows how to make a buzz cut look cool (ok, the Vuitton jacket helps too). Add a little bit of pomade if you want a hint of sheen or feel free to skip the products all together with this style.
