‘Modern Family’ Star Julie Bowen Wants You to Wear Sunscreen

When actress Julie Bowen would head out without sunscreen as a kid, her mom would shout, “You’ll regret this!” It was smart advice that was ahead of the curve, but it was the 80s and getting bronzed was in. “I’m old enough to remember when putting on sunscreen meant SPF 8,” laughs Bowen, now 45 years old. “Sunscreen was more like a sun oil, which was meant to pretty much cook you.”
When Bowen ended up with a severe case of sun poisoning at age nine, she was lucky enough to have a doctor open her eyes to the importance of protecting herself. “I learned this is for real, this is where skin cancer starts. It doesn’t take years and years in the sun,” she says. Although Bowen began regularly applying sunscreen in her teens, she admits that she hated the texture. “I would never wear it when I was working out,” Bowen reveals. “I felt like I was going to just sweat it off or it was too sticky or gooey. I would rather work out either early in the morning or later in the day, or just stay out of the sun.” Which is why the Modern Family star is happy to gush about Neutrogena CoolDry Sport sunscreen. “The technology is so much better now,” she says. “It is much lighter, it stays on better, it doesn’t make it feel goopy and gloppy. A mother of three boys under the age of eight, Bowen is now a fierce advocate of staying safe in the sun. Given that every year 5 million people in the United States are treated for skin cancer, with more new cases than breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancers combined, it’s a much-needed campaign.
