‘New Girl’s’ Max Greenfield on Facials and Facemasks

Max Greenfield plays the self-obsessed, and slightly insecure yet lovable ladies’ man, Schmidt, on FOX’s New Girl. In real life, he’s a married and not quite the metrosexual guy best known for his outrageous one liners like, “Can we just take a moment to celebrate me?”
On TV, Greenfield has a few quirky roommates, but off screen, he recently teamed up with Trulia to celebrate the launch of their new collaborative home search boards, which helps buyers and renters make the search for a new abode a bit more enjoyable. Speaking of home, we were curious to know about his current roommate—specifically if they share any beauty products.
In addition to staying active (yeah, we’ve seen those abs on the small screen), Greenfield told us about what makes him feel confident, the hair products he uses, a spa service he isn’t too fond of, and an at-home treatment he’s looking forward to trying.
Yahoo Beauty: Your character Schmidt on New Girl is super high maintenance. Do you relate, in terms of grooming?
Max Greenfield: Not so much. I feel like Schmidt is an extreme. I don’t think anybody goes as far as he does!
Is there one thing—like skin, nails, hair— you care about most?
I think the only area in which I really put forth the time and effort is the hair department. It’s more about maintaining it. I don’t want it to go anywhere.
What products are you using?
We use a lot of Kevin Murphy stuff on the show, which I take home and really like.
Do you eat anything special for beauty benefits?
You know what I hear is really good for your skin, which I do on a daily basis? Once in the morning and once in the afternoon, I eat a handful of almonds.
What else are you doing to stay healthy?
I do a lot of CrossFit. A good week for me is four days a week.
What makes you feel confident?
I think confidence comes from being present and being prepared—moments where you’re expected to be confident. I think having success in those moments comes from being prepared. Other than that, being able to be present in the moment.
You’re married – do you ever steal your wife’s beauty products?
Once in a while, I’ll wake up, and my skin will be really dry. I’ll steal one of her moisturizers. She has multiple moisturizers. I never know which one to choose. I always feel like I’m choosing the wrong one. I don’t steal, as much as I ask for her help.
Are your wife’s beauty products stored separately from your grooming stuff?
They’re definitely separate. I don’t think we’re sharing any of the same makeup. I have my own makeup.
Are there any beauty products or treatments you’ve gotten that have ended miserably?
I’ve gotten one or two facials in my life. I have not loved them. They hurt so bad!
Have you sworn them off?
I’m certainly not into it. I’m not going to get a facial on my own accord. Somebody would have to force me to get one.
What has been your experience with at-home spa treatments?
I haven’t done any of the masks. I like the idea of putting a bunch of stuff on my face and walking into the bedroom and casually asking a question to my wife, like, “Where’s the remote control?” with a straight face on.
