How This Pre-Diabetic Woman Lost 110 Pounds
At age 20, Chenise Nupp's doctor prescribed high blood pressure medication and told her she was pre-diabetic. At the time, she couldn't believe that as a 20-year-old needed to take medication for high blood pressure. That diagnosed inspired her to take her health more seriously.
For Nupp, she had been overweight since childhood, she revealed to TODAY. While she had tried crash diets, she always ended up gaining the weight back.
"I thought there was nothing I could do. I was always going to be overweight," she said.
While she had accepted her reality, a coworker at her Casper, Wyoming office explained that her husband recently had weight-loss surgery, which helped him to lose weight. Nupp then decided to consult a doctor to see if surgery was an option for her.
Before a surgery was scheduled, she had to lose 10-15 pounds first. "They want to know, obviously, you are going to make the changes or surgery won't work," she told TODAY.
She began her weight loss journey by cutting carbs and soda from her diet and doing low-impact exercises, such as walking and swimming. With her change in her diet and more exercise, she lost 15 pounds and then underwent a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in November 2015.
To continue her weight loss journey, Nupp has focused on eating a high-protein, low-carb diet and lots of fruits and veggies, as well as exercising by swimming, walking her dogs, and playing volleyball.
"I am basically walking proof that you do not have to go to the gym for it to work," she said. "As long as you are not sitting on the couch."
Since her surgery, Nupp has lost a total of 110 pounds! And while some people tell her that having her gastrectomy made losing weight easy, she explains that she has to eat healthy and exercise, just like anyone else looking to lose weight.
"It is not a one day fix. You have to change," she said. "Putting in the work, it will pay off."
Nupp no longer requires any medications, and has become her healthiest self yet.
Nupp wrote on Instagram, "NEVER be afraid to change those nasty habits for the better. 285 to 175. Could I lose a little more? Sure! But I am no longer held back by my weight and it is not a crutch for me. I have opened my world up by caring more about my overall health vs. how good that food tastes. Chase your dreams!! It is always worth it. I work hard each day to choose my foods correctly and sometimes I fail but I never give up anymore. Those baby steps add up people. Stick with it :)"
