The Real Reason Zendaya Never Seems to Wear the Same Hairstyle Twice

Whether it’s on the red carpet, on television or in a CoverGirl campaign, Zendaya is a total boss when it comes to style and beauty. The star now has her own clothing line and just launched her own app — because she’s simply that good. And she knows it. She’s gracing the cover of Allure’s January issue, and is talking about her personal style and what she felt during that Guiliana Rancic scandal.
“I love to slay a red carpet,” the 20-year-old star tells Allure. “When I step on one, I’m a different person, like Sasha Fierce and Beyoncé. Honestly, I walk like an old man—the Coleman Trudge. On the red carpet, I’m this dainty, slow, elegant gazelle.”
But when it comes to getting dressed, glamour isn’t all she’s after. The star actress shares that she and her stylist Law Roach take a different approach to fashion. “We don’t do pretty. Pretty is boring.”
And while she has her own clothing line, her expertise doesn’t just lie in the fashion world. With her own makeup tutorials in the works, it’s no surprise that Zendaya doesn’t need a makeup artist — she says she does her own makeup when she’s in L.A. “I just use a taupe shade on my eyes, thin cat-eye liner, and natural everything else,” she says.

The star, who found herself in a red carpet controversy when Giuliana Rancic made a seemingly racially-charged remark about her Oscars hairstyle last year, says that although “we have a long way to go”, positive things have come from the incident.
“There was a little girl for Halloween last year that was me from the Oscars,” Zendaya tells the magazine, adding that her Zendaya Barbie was a milestone for her as well. “I think that was a big moment not just for me but for women of color.”
Like many women of her generation, however, Zendaya doesn’t let any opinions get in her way — and turns to her hair as a form of self-expression.
“I feel a responsibility to showcase different kinds of beauty through hair—every woman should be able to see herself in me in some way,” she says. “I love when I get to wear my cornrows, because it’s surprising. So many people are like, ‘Wow! What a fresh, new, fun hairstyle!’ But no. It’s been around for a long time. I’m just whipping it out.”
