Should You Be Using Plant Stem Cells?

If using plant stem cells in your beauty regimen sounds like a science-y solution, you’re right. This latest lab-derived trend is one of the newest anti-aging, cell-renewing cosmetic treatments of note. What makes them unique? “These are cells in plants that are capable of becoming any other type of cell in that organism and then reproducing more of those cells,” says NYC-based dermatologist Dendy Engelman, MD.

Here’s why that matters, in the theory: when applied to skin, hair or nails, the adaptable plant extracts help the rejuvenation process by enhancing cell turnover. They’re also able to fight oxidative stress with added nutrients. (However, the former is more based on anecdotal evidence than proven facts and studies.)

Recent research is digging into the technology, and finding some early potential for anti-aging beauty. Engelman thinks the magic behind the stem cells of rose and Edelweiss might be pretty simple, though. “The benefits are most likely attributable to the topical antioxidants that they contain,” says Engleman. “And not from the plant stem cells themselves.”

Time and research will render a final verdict — but either way, plant stem cells are becoming key players in some new luxe products on the market. Click through to see the ones to try now.
