Spring Beauty Trend: Perfectly Undone Hair

Why is it that sexy, just-rolled-out-of-bed hair never actually comes to fruition by just rolling out of bed? The off-duty model style was in heavy rotation on the spring runways and our favorite celebs have been rocking the no-fuss style on the red carpet, but it’s surprisingly not the easiest look to achieve. We hit up celebrity hairstylist Kylee Heath, whose clients include Sofia Vergara, Diane Kruger, and Rashida Jones for tips on achieving the cool-girl look, whether your natural texture is curly and hard to wrangle, or so straight every style falls limp.

It’s always great to start with a reference photo, and Heath says supermodel Gisele Bündchen has mastered undone hair—as seen above on the Chanel spring 2015 runway. See also: “Kate Moss then and now, the Olsens, and the French, as they’ve had this figured out for a while.” Heath says that like ripped jeans and deep berry lipstick, undone hair has a ‘90s vibe that’s very much on-trend, it’s important to mix it up. “It is all about meeting in between done and undone,” says Heath. “Ripped jeans with flawless makeup. Tousled hair with accessories and heels. I especially love the undone look moving into summer.” Read on for her tips, tricks, and must-have products.

Use sleep to your advantage
Whether your hair is pin straight or wavy, Heath says the best way to achieve the undone look is by washing your hair the night before, and sleeping on it slightly damp. “Straight hair can even sleep with a super loose braid,” says Heath. In the morning, you’ll wake up with just the right texture. “If you have hair that is wavy or curly at the roots, hit the roots with a smoothing iron to tame any frizzy sections, and maybe some pieces just on the ends.”

Get the look on the fly
If you wake up and decide you want the undone look, try this trick: “Put your hair in two braids, spray them with a surf spray, and wear them from when you get out of bed until five minutes before you walk out of the door,” says Heath. “Take the braids out, shake your head upside down, and spray with a dry shampoo like R+Co Death Valley ($29).” Heath suggests parting your hair unevenly on the side that gives you the most volume.

Change up your look for evening
“In the morning, put your hair in two low, twisted rope braids, tie them with an elastic, and mist with a texture spray,” says Heath. “Then twist the two rope braids together in the back to create a low bun. It is a perfect quick style to wear to work. Once you get home, take them out, shake your hair out, and spray with hairspray for cool, undone texture.”

Add texture with strategic products
“I love the Bumble and bumble Surf Spray ($27) or Kevin Murphy makes an awesome one called Hair Resort ($29) for damp or dry hair,” says Heath. “And Shu Uemura makes a hair Texture Wave Dry Finishing Spray ($38) that is fabulous.” Another fave is Kevin Murphy’s Powder Puff Volumizing Powder ($30). “It is great to add grit at the roots to hold volume or teasing, and if you sprinkle a little of the powder throughout the ends it will add texture.”

Look cool without looking sloppy
“I think the point is for it to look like you just ‘woke up like this.’” Says Heath. “But if you have bangs, blow them out and leave the rest of your hair be. Or if your hair has a lot of texture, hit some sections and the ends with an iron quickly just so it has some shine and isn’t too, too sloppy.” If you think you’ve gone too far and want to add a bit of polish, try a light, shine-enhancing hairspray like Shu Uemura Sheer Lacquer Finishing Spray ($38).

Fake texture when it’s truly impossible
“If you have straight, fine hair, get clip-in extensions for when you go out or have an important meeting,” says Heath. If you add one strip, waves and texture may take to the extensions more than your natural slick texture. “Create loose waves to the piece with a curling iron—leaving out the ends—and spray it with a surf spray.” Don’t forget to curl some of your own hair in the front sections before clipping in the piece. “Mixed in with your texture, it will give you volume and that perfect undone look without having to put much heat on your actual hair.”
