Super Bowl Beauty: Katy Perry and Idina Menzel's Glam Hair and Makeup Looks

Pop stars are pros when it comes to their stay-put arena makeup and hairstyles, but when you’re performing for 100+million viewers at the Super Bowl everything has to be perfect. The New England Patriots may have won the big game, but half time star Katy Perry and national anthem opener Idina Menzel were both beauty winners on Sunday at Super Bowl XLIX.

The coolest part of Katy Perry’s makeup look? Celeb makeup guru Jake Bailey created it using all COVERGIRL products from the drugstore. “I decided to go with a classic Katy look—elongated cat eyes, lots of mascara, super sparkly gold and silver glitter, and a bold red lip for glamour and showmanship,” says Bailey. “I wanted her to glow and sparkle for her big moment.” First he got her skin HD TV ready by by evenly applying a dime size amount of COVERGIRL Outlast 3-in-1 Foundation in Natural Beige ($11) to her face and neck. Bailey drew on her elongated cat eye with COVERGIRL Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner in Black Onyx ($6) and painted gold and silver glitter onto an adhesive, placed directly above the black liner. Next, he applied COVERGIRL Eye Shadow Quads in Blooming Blushes ($9) for flattering dimension. “I love this palette because it takes the guesswork out of getting gorgeous eyes, it has number for the shades—1, 2 3, 4—so I know just how to apply! I used the fourth shade to define the crease and the first shade to highlight the lids.” To complete the eye, Bailey curled Perry’s lashes and added two coats of COVERGIRL Full Lash Bloom by LashBlast Mascara in Very Black ($7) since the formula is really flexible and wouldn’t flake off during her rigorous performance. For a warm cheek color, Bailey applied COVERGIRL Clean Glow Blush in Roses ($7) using the lighter shade on the apples of her cheeks, and the darker shade in the hollows as a contour, and used COVERGIRL truMAGIC Luminizer ($11) to highlight her cheekbones and brow bones.

For the finishing touches on Perry’s makeup, Bailey accentuated her brows with COVERGIRL Pow-der Brow + Liner in Dark Brown ($12). And lastly he used a trio of lip colors to create the perfect pout. First he lined her lips with COVERGIRL Lip Perfection Lip Liner in Hot ($7). Next, he applied one coat of COVERGIRL Colorlicious Lipstick in Seduce Scarlet ($9)—a classic red. He polished it off a drop of COVERGIRL Lip Lava in Mauva Lava ($9) to shine on camera. With so many steps and products, it’s certainly not a look for every day, but if the products can hold up under pressure through a sweaty dance routine, they surely won’t let you down for your next night out.

Through numerous costume changes, Perry’s high ponytail remarkably remained impeccable. “Katy specifically asked for the perkiest pony you’ve ever seen!” says celebrity stylist, Clyde Haygood. He deliberately created a style with extra bounce and movement, so she could twirl her ponytail around with ease during her performance with Lenny Kravitz. The bulk of the ponytail itself was actually a fake! Haygood used a Velrco ponytail made with human hair to add length and volume. To keep things secure, he sewed an elastic band to the base on the inside of the faux pony, and added a toggle closure so it could wrap around Perry’s own hair.

For Perry’s ultra-slicked back hair, Haygood used KMS California HAIRSTAY styling gel ($11) to add a “glass-like shine.” To perfect her bouncy ponytail, he divided hair into five 3-inch sections sprayed them with the heat-activated KMS California FREESHAPE 2-in-1 styling + finishing spray ($20) and curled them with a 2-inch iron to create an “S” wave. Then he brushed out the curls for more movement. Once the ponytail was attached, Haygood used a little KMS California HAIRPLAY gel wax ($19) to tame any flyaways and lock in the style while maintaining flexibility.
Katy Perry may have stolen the show at half time, but Idina Menzel looked completely radiant while singing the national anthem. Makeup artist Kristofer Buckle created her look using his own line of products, Kristofer Buckle Cosmetics. First he used his Always Flawless Day To Night Palette ($48) for her eyes. “Idina has gigantic olive green eyes, so I smoked Scandal shadow to the outer corners of her eyes and added Backstage to her creases to accentuate their almond shape,” he says. “When it came to her lips, I used Nude Mood from my new Absolute Nude Lip Crayons ($42). They are the perfect color and texture if you need a wearable nude lip.”
Both looks were totally different approaches to stadium beauty, but they were perfectly representative of these unique performers.
