A Teacher Is Dying His Hair Crazy Colors to Raise Money for Student’s Service Dog
We’re used to seeing celebrities change their hair color on a weekly basis, but sixth grade social studies teachers? Not so much.
John Sigmon, a teacher at Southeast Middle School in Kernersville, N.C., is changing up his look for a good cause, encouraging his students to help raise money by dyeing his hair a different color each week for four weeks before shaving his head this Friday. The money they raise will help Warren Van Tassle, a 6-year-old student at a neighboring elementary school, who suffers from epilepsy and has already endured 85 seizures. Van Tassle needs a service dog to help keep him calm during his seizures, but service dogs cost up to $15,000.
“I decided to do the hair-dyeing element to make it more fun and interactive for the students that were contributing,” Sigmon tells Yahoo Beauty. “The students have enjoyed it, and it has been fun. As far as colors, we started off with just the bleaching process to get it ready to dye. So the first week it was a bleach-blond look.”
Despite garnering some funny looks, Sigmon is letting his students pick a color for him to dye his hair each week. “The first week that a student chose the color it was hot pink,” he says. “Then the second week was green, and this last week was red. This Friday we will be concluding the drive with several of the students who have contributed participating in shaving off my hair completely.”
Sigmon and his students had already raised $1,300. The Van Tassle family hopes to get the new service dog later this year.
This isn’t Sigmon’s first time changing up his hairstyle for a good cause. Three years ago, he shaved his head after his students raised $2,500 to help a classmate fighting leukemia. His daring hair choices are well worth the stares.
