Red Lips

In keeping with the retro glamour trend, the classic red lip was in full force. Taylor Schilling’s Grace Kelly-inspired look featured lips that perfectly matched her Ralph Lauren gown. Makeup artist Tina Turnbrow used Nars Red Square Velvet Matte Lip Pencil for lasting color. Naomi Watts looked vibrant in a standout orangey-red shade L’Oréal Infallible Le Rouge in Ravishing Red. Knockout Eyeshadow

Could Claire Danes bring back blue eyeshadow? The peacock blue in her hand-beaded Valentino gown inspired makeup artist Matin to go with deep blue Nars Giove Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow paired with blue-green Kalisté Eyeliner Pencil. Viola Davis killed it on the red carpet with vibrant orchid shimmer eyeshadow paired with thick black liner. Retro Waves

Old Hollywood waves are an award-show staple, but this time around, the curl is a little looser—and more modern, too, as seen on Jessica Chastain, Gina Rodriguez, and Amy Adams. The key to keeping this style feeling finished, not flat? Volumizing spray. Birchbox stylist Laini Reeves used Oribe Volumista on Adams’s damp hair before blow-drying, ensuring that her ‘do had lift and movement.

The Updo

There was no one way to do the updo this year. Kate Beckinsale’s was big and bold, most likely done with the help of a hair bun or donut.  Kerry Washington went with a cooler, messier take thanks to stylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew for Neutrogena. The look was achieved by curling certain pieces of Washington’s hair with a 1-inch curling iron, teasing the hair on top and in the center, and finally pulling it into a messy chic bun with some twists and braids. Kiera Knightly’s pretty twisted updo was held in the back by a diamond feather clip by Chanel.

Braids

Not just for 6-year-olds anymore, the red carpet proved that braids can be chic…and manly? Jared Leto’s braid talk lit up Twitter as he swapped last year’s man bun for the man braid. Emily Blunt’s Grecian-inspired look featured a chic updo with braids. The look, done by Birchbox stylist Laini Reeves, was achieved with Malin+Goetz Sage Styling Crème on wet hair, a tousled blow-out and two inside-out braids crossed over at the nape of the neck and secured with bobbi pins. Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt scored her first win for best supporting actress in a series, and raves for her modern braid. Stylist Ashley Streicher used Unite’s Expanda Dust Volumizing Powder to add texture and keep the wraparound braid in place.

Glowing Skin & Nude Lips

Bronzy, glowing skin paired with nude lips were a gorgeous way to rock the red carpet. Lopez amped up the look with a showstopping smoky eye in rich brown hues. Miller complemented her blonde tousled short bob with Charlotte Tilbury Beach Sticks in Ibiza as an all-over bronzer, Moonbeach highlighter on top of cheekbonesand Formentera as the blush. Aniston’s cheeks glowed with a combination of Chanel Le Blush Crème de Chanel in Destiny, then Chanel Le Blush Crème de Chanel in Intonation on apples of cheeks, finished with a dusting of bronzer Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour in N°70. Her nude lips were courtesy of Chanel Precision Lip Definer in Mordoré-Nude and two coats of Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Deauville.

The Beard

The hottest accessory on the guy’s last night wasn’t the man braid, it was a manly beard. As demonstrated by Hollywood’s leading men, the scruffy beard, which reached peak popularity in 2014, is here to stay. It looks great with a tuxedo, too. Matthew McConaughey’s slightly overgrown brown scruff complimented his slicked back hair, while Steve Carell kept his salt-and-pepper beard trimmed. Jamie Dornan, our suavest screen captain, didn’t opt for shades of grey and maintained a swoon-worthy dark brown full beard.
