The Eternally Chic Lauren Hutton

Before there were supermodels, there was Lauren Hutton. The eternally chic model’s career has spanned six decades. By our math, that means she has spent more time in a makeup chair than any other in her field. (She’s even shared her experience by developing a namesake cosmetics line.) So to say that Hutton has cultivated strong opinions on what makeup works for her is an understatement (and, as demonstrated in her cover story, she isn’t afraid of strong opinions). It’s no surprise, then, that the standout look from VIOLET GREY’s cover shoot with Hutton (mulberry-tinged lips, eyes, and cheeks) was the result of a joint effort between Hutton and makeup artist Pati Dubroff.
Hutton first met Dubroff more than a decade ago, and the veteran artist isn’t afraid to admit that she has even learned a thing or two from Hutton. “Lauren taught me that women over 50 shouldn’t wear shimmer; it actually accentuates lines instead of adding luminosity to the face like one would think,” Dubroff says. Instead, the key to a beaming complexion lies in hydrating, dewy products. The proof of the illuminating strategy lies in this photo, which features Hutton at her finest, in timeless shades of mulberry and a soft, radiant glow.

MOISTURIZER
The importance of hydration cannot be overstated: Begin by liberally applying La Mer’s The Moisturizing Soft Cream to the complexion with clean, dry hands. With your ring finger, pat the eye cream from La Prairie’s Anti-Aging Eye & Lip Perfection a Porter around the orbital bone, then apply the balm to the lips, and allow to soak in for 15 minutes.

PRIMER
To prep the skin for makeup, smooth Dior’s Pore Minimizing Skin Refining Matte Primer over the entire complexion using your fingers.

CONCEALER
To keep skin looking light and fresh, strategically conceal only where needed, instead of applying a full face of foundation. This technique called for three formulas: Clé de Peau Beauté’s Concealer in Honey for under the eyes, Hutton’s own Natural Face Disk on imperfections on the rest of the face, and Sensai’s SPF 15 Concealer Brush in CB02 for brightening key points on the cheek and brow bones. All three formulas should be blended with a small concealer brush (Violet says try Bobbi Brown’s Concealer Blending Brush).

BLUSH
Cream blush gives skin luminosity sans shimmer. Apply Laura Mercier’s Crème Cheek Colour in Blaze to the apples of the cheeks using your fingers, and blend, starting slowly and then adding more color until you reach the desired hue. Set with a light dusting of Bobbi Brown’s Blush in Tawny. Then, to hydrate the skin further, mist a duo fiber brush (synthetic bristles don’t absorb moisture and clump like natural bristles do) with Tatcha’s Moisturizer Spray Dewy Skin Mist, and pat it onto the high points of the face, such as the top of the cheekbones and the brow bone.

EYE SHADOW
Apply Utowa’s Eye Shadow in BR387 to the top eyelids, mindful not to let any color get into the inner corners of the eyes. Focus the darkest concentration of color on the top lashline and center of the lid. Add Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Cream Shadow in Shore to the inner corners and along the brow bone for added polish.

MASCARA & BROWS
Use Laura Mercier’s Brow Definer in Fair and a small angled brush (Violet says to try Utowa’s Oblique Eyebrow Brush 70B) to fill in any sparse areas of the eyebrows, then curl the lashes with Utowa’s Eyelash Curler. To preserve the softness of the eyes, apply only a single coat of mascara to the top lashes using Dior’s Diorshow Iconic Mascara in Black.

LIP COLOR
To begin, mix shades from M.A.C.’s Pro Lip Palette in Select Plums and Bobbi Brown’s Lip Color in Nude on the back of your hand (or on the lid of the palette) to create a hue that looks most appealing against your skin tone. Prep the lips by applying Dior’s Pore Minimizing Skin Refining Matte Primer all over the pout with a clean concealer brush. Paint on a coat of color with a lip brush, blot, then add one more. Perfect the line using Laura Mercier’s Lip Liner in Chestnut.
