Spring Trends: The Hair Colors to Try Now
Another fashion month has come and gone and we’re left to process all the information we received from the runway. Are we really going to be wearing cropped, flared jeans? And gold lamé? Obviously, we’re not going to coat our mugs in gold leaf à la Rick Owens, but are we taking any beauty risks?
When it comes to hair color, I turned to the only human I trust with my own hair (and the only colorist that Behati Prinsloo trusted on her wedding day), Roxie Darling, to answer my questions. Darling, a colorist at the Hairstory studio (owned by the famous Michael Gordon, who started Bumble and Bumble), has been named one of ID Magazine’s 30 Under 30, and is an all-around magical creative genius with campaigns such as Balenciaga under her belt. Here’s what she had to say about the new hair-color trends.
Yahoo Beauty: I know you work with a literal rainbow of color at Hairstory and in your work all the time but are there any colors or tones emerging this season specifically?
Roxie Darling: Neon is coming back in a strong way as shown at the Jeremy Scott show; however, on the opposite end of the spectrum there is flesh-tone hair color, which I predict will be an emerging trend. When flesh tones are done right, they can be extremely complementary to a woman’s skin tone—for me, it’s very exciting as a trend, as I don’t feel flesh tones have been fully explored.
As far as the most important color trend, it’s the current move away from harsh shampoos and detergents, which strip color and destroy hair. With Purely Perfect Cleansing Creme ($40), color lasts much longer, and because the hair becomes stronger and more resilient, I can push the limits with bleach and color.
What kind of a cut best complements these colors?
A cut that flatters a person’s face shape and fits into that person’s lifestyle. As far as neon colors go, they look best with a strong haircut, something quite bold, or long and very simple. Flesh tones look good on chin-to-shoulder-length hair—it needs to look as though the hair is still in good condition.
Should you dye your brows to match your hair color?
It’s case by case; sometimes the juxtaposition works and sometimes it doesn’t—depends on how bold you’re willing to be.
Where do you find inspiration for color?
I find inspiration everywhere, from the moment I open my eyes in the morning. However, most particularly, I find my greatest inspiration in nature.
Were there any shows from fashion week featuring color that you feel will be popular?
I thought the color that Edie Campbell showed up with was a fascinating medium blonde that in some light looked more ashy and in others more strawberry. I’m a big fan of color that you can’t necessarily pinpoint but makes you think—is it natural, or unnatural? But beautiful, not at all like the overuse of bright color for the sake of it. Color and shape need to be more beautiful this year.
