Must-Have Makeup Tool Found at Home Depot
The genius light you need to snap a flawless selfie.

One doesn’t normally unearth a beauty gem alongside power tools, but for Romero Jennings, director of makeup artistry at MAC Cosmetics, Home Depot is heaven. The rough and tough retailer is the first place he goes to discover the latest and greatest in technology, which explains the lightsaber I spotted in his kit backstage at Balmain this season. The Defiant flashlight he picked up in the same place as one can purchase a plunger is the pro’s secret weapon and “edge” on the competition (i.e., the “kids” 30 years his junior who work alongside him): “It helps me see detail you wouldn’t spot with the naked eye,” he explained.
The LED bulbs in white, red, clear, and blue also mimic the “expensive stage lights” installed above the runway and cancel out the shoddy yellow tones that typically illuminate the spaces behind the scenes. And in the current age of high-def where every microscopic pore on your face is front and center, this less-than-$20 device picks up mascara crumbs and unevenness before they’re captured on camera for the rest of time (lest we forget Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman’s powdery maquillage blunders on the red carpet). But even if you’re not concerned about paparazzi, this gizmo is a godsend for selfies. With the newest Ice Bucket Challenge already under way—the #WakeUpCall campaign for UNICEF—you’re going to need this little beacon of light to rival that “makeup-free” portrait of Naomi Campbell.
