These Cruelty-Free Makeup Brushes Will Change Everything

I’ve only ever thought to judge my makeup brushes based on two main criteria: how soft they are and how durable they are. (And, fine, maybe sometimes how pretty they are.) Then I tried out the Artis Elite Makeup Brush Collection and everything changed. Here’s what makes them different:

The design: they’re sleek and futuristic-looking, with flat, toothbrush-like heads packed full of super-soft hairs. I’ve tried plenty of luxurious, expensive makeup brushes, but these rank among the absolute softest. They’re also man-made (i.e., cruelty-free) using a high-tech process, which, according to the brand, means they have “microscopically tapered ends” that make for more even makeup application than animal-hair brushes.

The application: The collection includes ten brushes, ranging from a skinny, tapered eyeliner brush (it somewhat shockingly gives a precise, even line) to a large oval brush made for setting powder and allover blending. I tested the brushes with cream, powder, and liquid formulas and got smooth, even results with all three (my only complaint is that with powder, the brushes tend to lay the formula down especially thickly, so I had to blend a bit more than I usually do just to avoid looking cakey). So far, I’ve experienced absolutely NO shedding (my biggest makeup-brush pet peeve), which means these brushes are going to last a long time. The rubbery grips are also comfortable to hold, and the flat, forward-facing brush heads give you more leverage and control.

The (revolutionary) cleaning process: These brushes have a supersimple cleaning system that takes only a couple of seconds: It’s arguably the best part depending on how lazy you are. Instead of the usual soap-and-water routine, Artis makes an antimicrobial microfiber cleaning pad that does all the work for you. Just swipe the brushes back and forth on the cloth and it grabs the makeup residue (it’s especially effective with powders) off the hairs. No drying time, no having to reshape your brushes so they don’t dry with weird cowlicks, and no more having to carve out a time slot on Sunday (a.k.a. Makeup Brush Cleaning Day).

Artis Elite Collection brushes are available at artisbrush.com, with prices ranging from $24-$62.
